Picking up a VR or two mixed in with other spending - no problem. 5 CVS purchases per month totaling $5039.50 - asking for trouble.

I've been spreading 5k in beans a month between my Visa and Amex and thusfar no problems. I usually tack on another small purchase since I don't go too far out of my way to find them, so I'm not putting on 1007.90 every time, but usually close.

this is what i think (and i can assure you my opinion counts for nothing) - in the past 5 months, i have used my BB and hit the 10K mark each month (2 accounts between my wife and i). Out of all the cards - Citi is the one i am least concerned with. Amex takes a lot of care and planning. With Citi i have bought 4 VRs in 2 weeks and 4 VRs in 2 days - still havent got declined. I am thinking of moving towards GCs as well - just so CVS isnt on my statement 5 times a month. But i am not going to sit in fear that they will call me and rip into me. There is a loophole and i am using it. Worst case the close my account. Life goes on.
PS: My limit right now is 10K on 5 cards (Citi and US airways being 2 of them). |
Why would they care if you're doing it at 1X in moderation? They are making money off you as the cost to the bank for purchased miles (I'm guessing easily under 1 cent per mile) is easily less than the interchange fees they receive from merchants (typically 2.5-3%).
