The R-C was all around mediocre, as expected. When we were there in November, only 1 elevator was working (and it's a tall building), which led to waits upwards of 5 minutes every single time we went up or down. It was incredibly aggravating. Breakfast was also very mediocre.
Not sure if the Rittenhouse is any better (it was 2x the price for that specific weekend), but the bar is certainly low in Philadelphia for luxury hotels.

Philadelphia - Best Hotel
The Rittenhouse has new owners and completed renovations about a year ago - I'm still sad they gutted the Boathouse Bar to make a meeting room.
The Ritz is under renovation
The Four Seasons doesn't come back until 2018
The Logan is brand new in old Four Seasons space on the Parkway - haven't toured it yet but has Urban Farmer as restaurant (I like their Portland location in The Nines). Looks promising
I usually suggest The Sofitel and Palomar (Rittenhouse area) and if you want a cool rooftop bar then the Monaco in Old City

ex FS is managed by same company as RC chicago (and Nines)
"brand new" ? wasnt that big a renovation was it ?
edit - $28mm is not bad, although for 391 rooms

Hyatt at the Bellevue is interesting. It used to be a PH, even earlier a Cunard Hotel, and very long ago was the iconic historic old Fairmont that had the infamous outbreak of Legionnaire's Disease. Since then, there's been a complete renovation (but a few of the historic features were retained) with the lower floors being converted to fancy retail and office space. The hotel is connected to a local serious but somewhat luxurious private health club.
There are a few nice inns and B&Bs in the far suburbs, for example in New Hope (an artists' colony and historic small town for good food and weekend escapes, infamous as the place where Jessica Savitch died). Chadds Ford is another nearby small town known for its art.
The Four Seasons was horrible for a long time.

Photo of the Lobby at The Logan - really surprised by the makeover - hard to believe it was once the Four Seasons - lots of common space around bar and halls - loved Urban Farmer restaurant
