Hi everyone,
So I have been studying maps of FRA airport and cannot for sure tell if I can access part of the airport where Air Canada lounge is located.
So am arriving in FRA on SA260 - 4 hours in FRA and departing with LH456.
As far as I can tell I am arriving at B gates and departing at Z gates.
Question then is - transfer process will 'push me' to Z gates - can I visit the Maple Leaf lounge at B gates, level 3 and then walk to Z to board?
Thank you!

Welcome to FlyerTalk, PairOfTravelers,
One hour fo this connection should be good. You will arrive at Z, go through passport control to enter the Schengen area. You flight to Prague will very likely depart from A which is below/quite close to Z in the best case, or a 10 min walk to the end of A in the worst case.
Should your flight from JFK be delayed to the extent that your connection will be impossible, LH will rebook you on the next flight to PRG with seats available.

If you arrive in B you will have to clear security to visit any lounge including those in B. In order to visit the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge you will have to clear transfer security in B as if you are connecting from B20-63 gates. The lounge is on the same level as B transfer security. After leaving the lounge you have to follow the signs for Z gates which will take you back into non-secure area. Walk to the Skyline train, go one stop to A/Z and clear transfer security.

I don't have an EU passport or Schengen visa as I am in transit to the US, so I guess this will be a 'no can do' due to the need to go into non secure area and back in - if I understand correctly.

As long as you don't go through passport control you will remain in non-Schengen. The Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge is probably the best business lounge in FRA but you will have to decide whether it's worth going through security twice to visit the lounge. If you decide not to visit the Air Canada lounge you can go straight via the Skyline train to A/Z, through transfer security and visit the LH Business Lounge on the way to gate Z50.

My wife and I will be flying on Lufthansa and connecting in FRA for the first time. Both of us are :-:Gold, US passports and are flying in business on all segments.
We are flying IAD-FRA on LH 417 with a 3 hour connection to ZRH on LX 1059. If I've read correctly, we will clear immigration in FRA.
1. Will we arrive in the same terminal that the LX flight will depart from?
2. Will we have to go through a security checkpoint?
3. Any idea how far away the LX gate will be?
4. Which lounge would be best/closest to use?
Thank you in advance for any help.

2. Not normally (as long as your flight from IAD arrives at a Z gate)
3. It will be an A gate (one floor below Z gates) but the actual gate number can vary from day to day
4. As *G you will have access to the Senator Lounge on the way to gate A50. If your LX flight departs from A24-42 gate you may like to move later to the Business Lounge above A26 which is a former First Class Lounge and preferred by some people. As Business Class passengers you will also have access to the Welcome (Arrival) Lounge which probably has a better selection of breakfast than other lounges you have access to but since it is located landside you will have to re-clear security after visiting the lounge.

On our return, we fly LH1183, ZRH-FRA with an approximate 3 hour connection time for UA988, FRA-IAD.
I'm assuming our flight to IAD will be via the Z gates and that there is a Senator Lounge nearby. (Edit: See Senator Lounge near gate Z50.)
is it correct that the United flight will require a bus ride to a remote stand?

Hi all,
Just want to report back and provide a data point.
Recap: we were taking SQ326 from SIN with scheduled arrival at 20:40 and connecting to LH242 to FCO at 21:50
Our flight landed at FRA about 8 minute late due to late departure at SIN. It took about 15 minutes for the plane to taxi to the gate (either B24 or B26, I can't remember) and for us to get off the plane. It helped that we were sitting up front on Y cabin and both Premium Economy and Business class were practically empty.
We decided to clear immigration at the B gates. NewbieRunner was right that the terminal was quiet at that hour. The bad news was that they only had 2 officers manning the passport control counters (for all passport), and 1 of them left shortly after we got there. Fortunately we were not in the line that was suddenly closed. Cleared immigration within 15 minutes of stepping out of the plane.
Security check was quick as there were hardly anybody. Walked at brisk pace (with a restroom stop) thru the long tunnel to gate A30 where LH242 was due to depart and we arrived at the gate at 21:35. Looked like the flight was slightly late and it only started boarding shortly after we got there.
So all in all, 70 minutes would be a comfortable time to transfer from B gates arrival to A gates departure at that hour. We lost about 8 minutes in the late arrival but were still comfortable in clearing passport control, security check and the long walk.
Thanks again to NewbieRunner who provided detailed instructions and much help!

Yesterday and for the next few days the departure gate of LH242 appears to be A52, A26, A24, A26 and A20. The gate can and does change on the day of departure. A2-10 and A50-69 are bus gates. (A6-10 are downstairs.) If you arrive by the Skyline train the platform is above gate A16-17 (marked A,Z in a dark blue circle on this map)
but you will have to clear security and passport control in the central part of the concourse (marked with a red star on this map) and come out through the duty-free shops to the central atrium area (marked with a green star).
The terminal maps are a little misleading. If you clear security in B you will have to walk through the tunnel which starts near gate B13 and enter A departures between gates A15 and A17. If you take the Skyline train you will arrive above A15-17 but you will have to go through security and passport control somewhere above gate A11. You are correct in assuming that B security and gates A1-5 areas are not connected.
So it is hard to say which route involves less walking. Don't worry too much. At that time of the evening passport control should be quiet and hopefully transfer security as well whichever route you decide to take. You haven't said which class you will be travelling in but there are priority lanes at security for Business and First Class passengers as well as Star Alliance Gold members. There are also Fast Lanes for passengers on flights departing in less than 30 minutes.

You can monitor the departure gate for your flight to IAD on Lufthansa's flight status page. UA988 is also LH9290 and departed from Z20 yesterday, is scheduled to depart from Z20 today and tomorrow, Z23 on Saturday and Z25 on Sunday. The actual gate number could change on the day but it appears no bus ride is involved recently.

I think you have been reading too much about what could go wrong during a connection in FRA. (And I admit I haven't been helping!) If your flight from BHX arrives on time you will make the connection. If it's delayed by 30 minutes it's unlikely. But it's possible that the flight to FCO is also late. Remember also that there are Fast Lanes for passengers connecting to flights departing in less than 30 minutes.
- Our flight from Birmingham BHX to FRA was slightly delayed, but not too badly, still had 35 mins to connect to our 12:20 outbound flight to Rome FCO.
- The plane unfortunately took a while taxiing and parked somewhere in Downtown Frankfurt it seemed, and the bus ride to the terminal (AEUW) took around 10 minutes.
- When we got off the bus (12:00) there was a huge crowd of people getting into the area (mostly slowing down going up the escalator) and it took another 5 minutes for us to bypass that and get to passport control on the ground floor. Very badly organised, they needed separate lines at that point.
- My 17-year old daughter was not allowed to use the biometric passport scanner (odd, as getting back into the UK it works from 12+ over here, and BHX is quite a small airport). Luckily the officer at the machines arranged for her to be processed immediately through the manual checkpoints.
- We came out into Terminal 1 somewhere near gate A1 and my daughter and I speedwalked/ran the length of the terminal to Gate 28, where they were just closing boarding for the Rome FCO flight at 12:17. Thankfully they waited the extra minute or two for my wife and an older friend of ours who couldn't run to catch up and we JUST made the connection.
- One of our hold bags also made the connection, the other didn't. The Rome FCO staff said that around 26 cases had missed that flight due to various tight connections, and arranged for the missing bag to follow on the next flight and be delivered to our hotel (arrived just before midnight).
On the return journey, Rome FCO > FRA > BHX with a 90 minute layover:
- The first flight was delayed about an hour taking off due to adverse weather over the Swiss Alps.
- We touched down only 40 mins late and the bus ride to Gate 1A was fairly fast too.
- No passport control, so we found the tunnel to 'B' (thanks for the tip, encountering an elevator would have puzzled us otherwise).
- Followed signs for B48 and then encountered passport control. Those of us who could use the biometric gates did, but my daughter was held up more than five minutes in the main queue (they made no effort at all to fast-track her due to the tight connection and just shrugged in a 'what do you want me to do about it?' manner).
- Got through OK with 25 mins to spare. The outgoing flight was then delayed by an hour as it happens, so we'd have made it anyway.
So overall we made both of our connections, but it was not a pleasant or relaxed experience. Thanks very much for all the advice here, as knowing what we were likely to encounter at each stage was very welcome.
