Geven to replace Recaro 'NEK' seat for all new LH group A32S aircraft starting 2019

Lufthansa and Geven just announced this big news at the AIX18 in Hamburg this afternoon. Different recline for C vs Y.

https://newsroom.lufthansagroup.com/...5-f103cc400df9

With the start of the planned Airbus A320 Family aircraft deliveries starting in 2019, Lufthansa Group customers will be offered new seats on short- and medium-haul routes. The new, ergonomic pressure distribution and fully-structured seat upholstery will allow customers to have an ever more comfortable feeling on board. The newly, innovated literature pocket has been horizontally designed, leaving a slimmer backrest, which allows guests to enjoy more personal freedom. In addition, travel becomes more comfortable not only during the flight, but also while the aircraft is taxiing, during take-off and landing: Previously, guests were seated at a 12 degree inclination during the three phases mentioned above, whereas now they will be able to rest comfortably with their backrest at 20 degrees during the whole flight. Business Class guests can also set the backrest to 26 degrees during cruising altitude.

Did they say if the seat pitch will be greater in C than Y to accommodate the increased recline?

It looks like it already is, effectively, in recently delivered airplanes.

Sorry, I’m probably just extremely slow, but can someone please explain what the point of this is?

I always thought the reason why there isn’t a real business class seat (much to my personal frustration) is so the cabin can be flexible... so how does introducing differing seat pitches and recline give flexibility to allow for all business class pax to have the same experience in a flex cabin scenario?

The new A320ceo and neo with the space flex cabin created more space due to the removal of the lavs in the last row and some rearrangement in the front section. So the 12-13 rows in front of the emergency exit have more space and a better spacing. The rows behind the EE had an extra row squeezed in, so the spacing there is rather tighter or tight than upfront.

The curtain rails only reach so far back, so the number of potential extra recline seats is fixed.
It was a similar situation back in the old days when they had the transformer seats - often you could be sitting in the front rows of economy cabin that had the "business class" features.

Definitely. The NEK seat can probably be beaten only by an electric chair. Looking forward to getting rid of these torture chairs.

I would be hesitant to be too hopeful. I don't see how these seats would be more comfortable.Having said that, I, for one, don't find Recaro's NEK uncomfortable, though.

McGrover at VFT discovered the new A321 neo has been incorporated as A32Q in the time table and operates FRA MUC starting 01MAY. Its seems a 4th toilet is back, this time located near the EE behind the wing.

Capacity of the A321neo is 215.

Is no one going to mention referring to the aircraft as “she”?

You have. Ships are traditionally female in English, by extension aircrafts are as well. Nothing particularly strange.

My dad always referred to his cars as 'she'. However, he only ever drove old bangers so think more along the lines of decrepit granny ("The old gal has finally given up the ghost.")

PS: The use of 'he' or 'she' instead of 'it' is a common mistake when translating from gendered languages (most Indo-European ones) to non-gendered languages like English*. Aircraft in German has a neuter gender, however, so that's unlikely to be the reason in this case.

* Modern English has vestigial traces of gender remaining (pronouns). Old English was fully gendered and inflected (e.g. declensions of nouns; Modern English only has declension in..you guessed it - pronouns).

„She“ is the normal and more positive pronoun here.

It is true that English has „natural gender“ in most cases whereas German has „grammatical gender“, but the use of she for inanimate references is not at all unusual. As mentioned above, people refer to their beloved cars, ships etc as she. And it is not uncommon to hear something like „come on, climb baby“ (often encountered when men talk to/about women) on cockpit voice recorders in emergencies.
