I agree that such a unilateral move does not make perfect sense. This should be handled by / via EASA.

EASA usually follows the FAA, as they would expect the FAA to stay passive for issues with Airbus. All we have at this point is speculation, so the FAA and EASA will not act until there is some info on the cause from the NTSB. Of course airlines and politicians have to follow the concerns of their customers and voters....

This is the latest list of affected operators from FlightRadar24 blog: https://www.flightradar24.com/blog/a...irlines-crash/
The CAA statement: https://www.caa.co.uk/News/Boeing-737-MAX-Aircraft/
The five 7M8 referred to in the CAA statement are all Tui, I believe, although obviously operators like DY were affected, with 18 in service. DY have now grounded the MAX anyway.

The APFA is also calling on AA to ground its fleet. It's hard to see how much longer Boeing can tough it out in the circumstances. Eventually, their stance of falling back on FAA approval might become untenable, but that's what they're sticking to for now: https://boeing.mediaroom.com/news-re...ts?item=130403
UPDATE: The Netherlands just banned the MAX also.
