Go to the beach. Everywhere is perfect for strolling or rent a bike. You can either get an Uber or go by bus. To get to the bus take the parking lot shuttle, the bus station is at the back of the parking lot. Buses are cheap, safe and easy. Do a bit of research, every beach from Redondo up to Santa Monica is a bit different in atmosphere. Manhatten Beach is upscale with an interesting little aquarium at the end of the pier. Venice is scuzzy, lots of homeless but the beach is interesting in its craziness, particularly around Muscle beach, and the Venice Canals area is delightful, Santa Monica has everything.

Tar Pits?

I have never made it to La Brea Tar Pits. I understand the museum will be closed tomorrow (1/1/19), but are the grounds open? Can you see & smell the bubbling gooey mess even if the museum is closed? Ok, so you can probably smell it from blocks away, but can you visit on a museum holiday?

The actual tar pits are in the park which is open 365 days a year,

I'll be passing through LAX this evening with about a 4 hour connection. While I've been travelling fairly regularly throughout the pandemic, I haven't had any connections this long and given the current state of Covid in southern CA, the idea of spending 4 hours sitting indoors in the lounge or terminal doesn't sound too appealing. Can anyone think of somewhere outdoors that's a relatively short walk from T2 that might be a good spot to hang out and kill some time? It's mostly a concrete jungle out there but maybe there's an area away from the hustle and bustle of shuttle buses and Ubers that could work?

Maybe adjacent to the pet relief areas -- probably close to the roads, but.... https://www.dogjaunt.com/2011/03/pet...l-airport-lax/
It is a few years away, but the DL SkyClub will have a SkyDeck, I think.:)

Hi TuxTom,

We have a thread with suggestions of what to do during layovers at LAX (The consolidated "What to do on a layover at LAX" thread), unfortunately, due to technical issues I am not able to access it right now. I am not hopeful that this problem will be resolved over the weekend.

Many here suggest plane spotting at the little park near the In-N-Out. It's about a 20 minutes walk, one mile, from T2.

I thought about those spots or the designated smokers areas, but neither really seem ideal. I'm definitely looking forward to another SkyDeck in the DL system. I've enjoyed the new one at SLC quite a bit.

I was looking at this spot on Google Maps, and I think I might give it a go. Some exercise will be nice before my long flight anyway. I had thought the In-n-out was closer to 2 miles but when I plotted it out, it looks to be about a mile so that's not too bad. Unfortunately, I just had In-n-out for lunch the other day so I should probably find a healthier dinner option.

One additional locale in/at the central terminal complex is this memorial space at the east side of the complex.

Here's a path map:

Red is Terminal 2. Blue is the path. Green is the space.

Here's two additional views:

3D view looks from the east back across the outside memorial space and toward Terminal 2.

If you wanna stretch you can just walk along century by Hyatt towards marriott. It's 80F here now prob a bit cooler by LAX - perfect for a stroll...
if staying indoors - TBIT should not be crowded - kinda interesting to take a look what flights are operating

If no specific plans do all FTers here a favor ;) - check clarity labs covid testing site in T6 arrivals - supposedly they started doing 3 hr turnaround pcr there (vs 24-48 hr in tbit)

What did you end up doing after all was said and done?

I ended up having a pretty nice evening walking about outside. As I was walking out towards the memorial that you pointed out, I noticed their were several tables at the entrance to the LAX-it rideshare area so I grabbed a spot there for a little while before heading back to T2. It was very well lit and most people are just walking straight through to their ride so it was fairly calm other than the traffic nearby.
