You need to be more specific when you ask - areas in terms to avoid - for driving, shopping, hotel prices, security, traffic? Provide that & we can respond better.

The problem is, there are bad areas interspersed with the good areas, so it's really hard to pinpoint (aside from say, South Central but there's even nice area's there too).
And when you say tourist traps, like the other's have said, why are you going to be here? Work? That could determine where you stay. If you are going to be working downtown and don't want to do anything touristy you might wanna stay downtown.
If you are here for pleasure then you need to think of what you might like to do that's not touristy and then we can give you a better idea. Do you like the beach? Horseback riding? Hiking? Museums?

The problem with LA and tourist traps is that locals go to the same places as the tourist do such as
Hollywood
Beverly Hills
Santa Monica
The museums
Disneyland
Various beaches
Universal Studios
Griffith Park
I can't think of any place that only tourist go to but all of the above are busy
with tourist
Bad areas: There are good and bad areas back to back as mentioned above generally if you see bars on the windows of homes you know it is a bad area. If you stay on the freeway to get to one place or another and just know where you need to exit you will be fine. It is when you get off the freeway for gas or directions and find yourself where you shouldn't.

I think kef's point was, that if the OP was truly interested in some feedback he would have answered the numerous questions we all asked. Just a guess. Then again maybe he got what he was looking for from what WAS said.
