You're going to compare Hollywood with South Central Los Angeles? You're just making me laugh even more. Thanks for letting us know you don't know Los Angeles AT ALL. Hollywood crimes are primarily bar/club related (at night) and car break-ins during the day.

I'd take the actual reports from locals over so-called crime stats ANYDAY.

Crime statistics? For one, South Central Los Angeles has the most unreported crimes of all areas. Why? Illegal aliens (residing in the area) who refuse/won't report and area residents who are too scared to report. Where are the gangs located? What's their mode of transportation? Plus anyone who knows Los Angeles knows how the city and county water down their crime stats.

During the day the Green Line, Blue Line or any bus line in the area is at best o.k. to use. After dark, you're opening yourself up to being a crime victim. Period. If you don't have street smarts, stay away.

I have NEVER seen a Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputy (or any other law enforcement) on the Green or Blue line (or at any platform). I've never paid a cent to ride the Green Line either since the turnstiles are always broken...even after they are supposedly fixed as reported to the media.

Since you are a Hertz LAX expert, can I ask you about my rental ?

I'm gold basic...booked via pre paid voucher, the Chevrolet Cruze, since I need to save fuel (last year in another big trip the Prius help us with this). This year I changed the car and chose Cruze. If I had an upgrade, what car is good to economize fuel ?

Prius again or another model ?

It is a big roadtrip during 29 days.

I've only worked in the Los Angeles radio and tv news business for three decades. I know exactly what is going on in Los Angeles. You certainly don't.

Hertz has such a huge lot of cars, your chances of getting a Cruze are quite good. They do have many Pirius cars but an upgrade may cost you $30-$40 day based on the Hertz Carfirmation upgrades I have had this year and that's not worth it with gas around $3.75 gallon or less lately. You may be able to get than down to $20/day or a little less negotiating with a Gold agent (be sure to go into the Gold office or see the roving Gold agent at Hertz LAX for upgrades...they give better cars than the regular agents).

I normally drive a full size or larger and the best gas mileage I get is with a Camry so I really can't answer your question. Head over to the Hertz forum and search/ask your question there.

I don't know what time you arrive at Hertz LAX but my experience for the best time to rent a car there is anytime after sunrise in the morning (that's when they are most stocked with cars). Saturdays are the worst day...fewest available cars. Gold Choice, most days, is most filled around 9 am. I've been there so many times, that's the only time I rent now.

If you're not too tired from your flight (12h is pretty long though :(), I'd suggest going into downtown LA earlier than 6pm. That part of the city--and north of it--has experienced a bit of a resurgence the past 5 years.
