In Dutch, it is pronounced Schip - hol. The "ch" is pronounced as the Dutch "g", i.e. a harsh guttural sound. Try clearing your throat, and you will get the idea.

In English, it is best pronounced as Skip - hol.

Skip-pole (the p is pronounced more like ph and the whole word is spoken quickly with the accent on the first syllable).

Skip-hole: A place where they always misplace your bags.

It's pronounced A-M-S.

Or, you could try the word 'luchthaven', but that's not any easier...

Not the airport code, the name.

No, the word consists of two distinct syllables, "schip" and "hol". The former contains the famous Dutch G sound, the latter is pronounced as it is written, with an H. Anybody who speaks proper Dutch wil articulate both syllables clearly. A minority will stress the second syllable.

The origin of the name is unclear, but the oldest known document in which Schiphol is mentioned was written in 1477.

Actually, after speaking dutch for the past 20 years even I pronounce it schippol with (with the SCH of course being like LOCH as in LOCH ness). I don't leave a gap between any part of the name.

The name came from when it was all water, it was such a danger for ships that many of them sank there, hence SCHIP (ship) HOL (old spelling, probably meaning hell or hole).

Not necessarily. There are three competing explanations for the origin of the name Schiphol. For those who read Dutch :

Hoe komt Schiphol aan de naam Schiphol?

OK, now that's sorted, let's move on to pronouncing 'Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij'...

Here's another condundrum for the AMS experts (ik spreek een beetje Nederlands, but that's about it http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif):

What is the correct pronunciation of the diphthongs ei/ij?

I've heard the Amsterdam tram drivers pronounce 'Leidseplein' at least three different ways. Some pronounce the 'ei' like 'a' in English 'plane'; some pronounce it like the 'i' in English 'Time'; still others pronounce 'Leidseplein' as if it were spelled 'Laadseplaan'. Which is correct?
