I should imagine that most tram drivers speak "plat Amsterdams", hence the "Laadseplaan".

EI and IJ (as well as Y and EY which may be encountered in geographical and family names) are all pronounced the same way. There is no direct English equivalent to the correct Dutch pronounciation, it's somewhere between IE as in lie, and AY as in lay.

That answers a lot of questions for me. When i lived in Soestdijk and worked in Utrecht i could never figure out why "ei" was long "i" or long "a" depending on the speaker. For instance, Eindhoven was either aye-ndhoven or i-ndhoven and trein was pronounced like the english train, plein as in square was either plane or pline depending on the speaker.

It's pronounced A-M-S.

Or, you could try the word 'luchthaven', but that's not any easier...

Actually I pronounce it E-H-A-M <G>

Actually, the way things are at the moment, I pronounce it "sek-ond hoa-m"... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

(Just got laughed at by a KLM ticket agent tonight when I rolled up at AMS at 6pm, and bought a ticket LCY-AMS-LHR for tomorrow...)

I have always said it .... she-foal ... but when you say anything Dutch with an Australian accent, the local folks smile.

Fokker works well. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Trust me, FRA cannot compete at all with AMS, but if KLM can compete with LH is another question, though

And at AMS they only use the busgates for F 50 and 70`s, at FRA on a bad day you will find 5 or 6 busses ready to take the full load of an A 340 back to the Terminal.Once you are in the Terminal you are fine at AMS, however at FRA the fun really begins, elevator, disco tunnel, Sky Train...
