Most people ARE NOT willing to pay more for a pleasant flying experience. They don't care what the name on the plane says as long as it's the lowest airfare that meets their schedule. One exception is that people will pay a premium for a nonstop in many instances.

It really depends on the traveler. I'm currently an hour away from Indy, but most people I know will travel up to Chicago to fly their airline of choice, costing them way more in the process. I've shifted a lot of my traveling to Southwest out of Indy, even when prices are higher and connections are part of the travel. I'll pay a lot more to avoid flying AA whenever possible.

Shockingly enough, I also enjoy connecting, and, looking back at my most recent travels, connected exactly 50% of my trips despite having 10 daily nonstops between Indy and DC.
