2 PAX landing afternoon. Need to get to hotel (Ginza area) and enough to grab a snack. Then need cash for breakfast next day/walking money before banks/ATM open.

So, how much should I change here?

Individually, I would say anywhere between $200-500 is more than enough for transportation to the hotel, grab a snack and breakfast.

(NOTE: DO NOT TAKE TAXI FROM AIRPORT TO HOTEL) take airport limobus or the train(s).

Remember you can't use just the average bank atm to get money out, you either have to use the post office atm or you can also take advantage of citibank atms that are 24hr (see the citibank thread).

I would allow for...

2 tickets for Narita Express to Tokyo station = 6000 (roughly)
Taxi from Tokyo station to Ginza area = 3000 (comfortably)
Dinner for 2 = from 2000 to 6000 (of course you can spend more....)
Coffees etc. = 1000
Subway passes = 2000

So you can manage comfortably for the first day or so with 18,000yen (roughly $160)

However, I would be inclined to carry twice that. Just in case....
(I always take at least 30,000 from the ATM each time).

In terminal 1, there are a couple of ATMs hidden at the far right (when leaving customs) end.

Depending on the size of your bag you may also want to get it delivered. I think thats roughly $20 IIRC.

You can use your credit card for the Narita Express and the Limosine busses (but go to the bus counter on your left as you exit customs, the one on the right does not take credit cards). Saves having to change extra cash.

The Japanese word for this service is "Takkyubin" - If you search for "Takkyubin" on flyertalk, you will find oodles of information.

If you're talking about sending bags from the airport when you arrive in Japan - There are Takkyubin counters in the arrivals halls at all airports, which will provide the necessary address labels / forms etc. and take care of delivering your bags.

If you're talking about sending bags from a hotel - virtually any hotel will have the wherewithall to arrange a Takkyubin delivery. (Ask at front desk).

If you're not staying at a hotel, you can arrange Takkyubin delivery from most convenience stores.

It is also possible to send bags to the airport - the Takkyubin companies operate counters to allow you to collect your bags in the departures halls of all the major airports.
