Thanks for the tips. I think it would be safer to just go ahead and do the customs dance. If we're not able to board the connecting flight, then we'll stay in Narita for a day - and I have a feeling it would be a bit of a hassle to go through after first declaring us as transit pax.

I need to look into this more, but glad to know we'll be able to move around in the airport either way. Thanks!

Hi Guys......

Since this thread is over a year old I just wanted to see if there have been any changes recently with the new terminal 1 opened up...

I will be connecting YYZ-NRT-BKK (only 1 hour connection).

Arriving in Terminal 1 and departing in Terminal 1 I believe. From the terminal diagrams it appears that I simply have to go up 2 floors after I arrive? Is there security that I will have to go through again or is it clear sailing once we land?

Thanks...

The big change is that the airlines have shuffled around - for example, most of star alliance (except NZ) is in Terminal 1 now.

You should look at the Narita Airport website to verify which terminal is used by your first carrier ... and which terminal is used by the carrier to which you are connecting. (I assume that you have already checked this on the Narita website rather than relying on any out-of-date comments which might be on this thread).

Follow signs for transit passengers. There will be a security check to go through - but you will not need to recheck baggage.

If your connection is all in Terminal 1, then it is going to be relatively painless. If you need to move from one terminal to the other, I believe it's doable, but don't dawdle!

I did look on the website....all flights are in terminal 1 (arriving on Air Canada and connecting on Thai)

My connection is only 1 hour 5 minutes...If it is a separate security clearance for connecting passengers then I would imagine it's not nearly as busy as if I had just walked into the airport?....I'd like to have time to go to the UA lounge and take a shower. My other option is to take the later flight to Bangkok leaving at 6:10 instead of 4:55, which should give me more than enough time...(over 2 hours)

Correct - I sometimes see a long-ish line for the transit passengers, but I'm told that it moves fast. (Never had the pleasure myself, since NRT is always my "final destination").

EDITED - I've gone through this now. Richard from SF (below) points out that there are multiple security checkpoints. So if you see a queue at one of them, you should keep walking until the next one.

IME, Security checks are generally efficient at NRT. (However, in these days of extreme security being enforced for flights to the US and UK, the normal efficiency might be disrupted).

The thing that regularly takes ages at NRT is immigration (on the way into the country and on the way out of the country). You are lucky that you don't need to go through immigration...

Hi

If I do not have my BP for the onward flight, can I get it at Narita Airport? Do I get it from security checks or after security checks? Where is the transfer counter located?

Transfer counters are after the security check.

Print a copy of your itinerary as proof of your onward flight from Narita. The security officials will want to see that.

Once you pass through the security check, you can pick up your boarding pass from the transfer counter and then walk to your gate (if it's in the same terminal) or take the bus to the other terminal.

When you check-in for your first flight, make sure that they interline your luggage all the way to your final destination.

hclee01, I assume your situation is that you are connecting through Narita, but changing to a different airline. If the connection is within the same terminal, it is really pretty simple. You exit your arriving flight and just follow the signs to connections. You will first go through a security check - the standard "bags through the machine" check. The security folks will ask for your boarding pass for your onward flight, but I have gone through by showing them some proof of my onward flight (itinerary or something) and tell them that I need to pick up the boarding pass there.

There are transfer desks near the departure gates - I am more familiar with the Terminal 1 carriers - United's transfer desk is near the Red Carpet Club. AC has a transfer desk near the NH club.

Should not be a problem, but please just bring some proof of onward connection to show to the security check folks.

OK, the clue about security for transfer passengers at Narita: there are MULTIPLE places where you can go through security, although not all of them will be open, invariably, more than one of them is. So if the line you see first is long, keep walking towards immigration and you will see others. Often one is jammed when others can be completely empty.

It is helpful for e-ticket holders to have a printout of their itinerary, but you can probably talk your way through if you look presentable and are polite, even if you don't have one.

The domestic flights use to depart from the small terminal attached to T2. Now that ANA is in T1, does anyone know where the domestic ANA flights depart from?

Found it, in T1 also.
