Hi I am flying to Monbetsu next Feb to hopefully see drift ice hope to see .Does any one know how much flights usually are from Tokyo.I am seeing $350 but hoping less. This is 3rd time trying to see Drift ice .

Monbetsu Airport is currently served by once a day flight between Tokyo Haneda by ANA. Currently, on random days in Feb 2024, I am seeing Super Value 75 fare (restricted 75 days advance purchase) for 15,870 to 21,770 yen each way, which will be around US$350. Are you quoting a round trip? Since this Super Value 75 is the most restricted fare and the month of Feb. is a tourist season for drift ice viewing (you will not be the only one heading to see the drift ice at Monbetsu), I will not expect the fare to go any significantly lower by waiting to see how the fare will fluctuate.

Using Experience Japan Fare on ANA, I am seeing somewhere around US$ 280.00 for round trip Haneda (Tokyo)-Monbetsu round trip in Feb. 2024. Again, with one of the peak tourist seasons (drift ice viewing) I will not expect fares to get any significantly lower by waiting.

Sounds like a good use of airline miles if you have them. You might also look at flights to Memanbetsu airport, which has a train connection to Abashiri:

As jib71 has suggested, Abashiri is another location for drift ice viewing in Hokkaido. Memanbetsu airport is located about 12 miles from Abashiri, and Memanbetsu airport has five flights per day from Tokyo (Haneda) and five flights per day from Sapporo (Chitose) which makes it very convenient connecting to/from other parts of Japan.. Abashiri is about 62 miles southeast of Monbetsu, and drift ice viewing tour boats depart from both Monbetsu and Abashiri. Because Abashiri (Memanbetsu airport) is more frequently served by flights than Monbetsu, Abashiri gets more drift ice viewing tourists than Monbetsu.

Also, JR Hokkaido runs drift ice viewing tourist trains during the month of February from Abashiri station. Abashiri - Shiretoko Shari portion of Semmo Line of JR Hokkaido runs right at the shoreline with the view of the Sea of Okhotk. Drift ice viewing train is popular, but the amount of drift ice that comes to shore varies and tour boats give more views of drift ice up close.

This past February Hokkaido Air System (JAL group) flew drift ice viewing charter flights from Memanbetsu (MMB) airport. The charter flights were operated as a part of the tour package sold through JAL, The flight was by ATR42-600, view of drift ice from 2400 ft. with no seats obstructed view by a wing. There is a good chance Hokkaido Air System will do similar charter flights in Feb. 2024. Another option of drift ice viewing in February.

Thank you so much still looking at all options will plan to stay 2 or 3 days to hopefully not miss it this time .I went in 2020 stayed in Abashiri but weather was bad so never got to see drift ice .This Feb I could not get a hotel reservation as I had to fly to London family emergency and when I tried to book everything full . will get it all sorted early this time .I did see Hokkaido train pass seems reasonable for a week .I dont want to go to Sapporo or Asahikawa as I have seen their snow festivals twice .Hopefully avoid that area as I booked hotel in 2020 was very expensive .I havent been to Monbetsu but boat looked nice. I will hopefully see one or the other.
