Cherry blossom forecast - 2022

As the winter cold continues, it's nice to know that the end is not that far away. Here's the blossom forecast, updated on 1/27.

Looks like cherry blossom will be along the line of the annual average, except for part of Hokkaido is forecasted as late as a week from the annual average. Wonder what will be like this year's cherry blossom season? Hope least people in Japan will able to go out and enjoy cherry blossoms this year.

From the photos last year, they hardly stayed home. Granted, outdoor is low risk so I do not see why not.

The latest update for cherry blossom forecast indicates Tokyo will see a start of cherry blossom around March 20, which is forecasted as the earliest location in Japan. Usually, a week after the start of the cherry blossom is considered to be the peak, which means the peak of cherry blossom in Tokyo will be around March 27.

The start of cherry blossom forecasted (again, the peak of blossom is usually 7-9 days after the start of the blossom)
Osaka: March 26
Nagoya: March 23
Fukuoka: March 21
Sapporo: April 23
Sendai: April 3
Aomori: April 15
Hiroshima: March 21
Kochi: March 24
Kagoshima: March 27

Himeji-jo on April 6

We've been Sakura viewing in various places this Spring (Shikoku, Hiroshima, Kyoto, etc.) but we just got back from Himeji-jo, and it's been far and away the most spectacular viewing experience for us.

From every angle and distance, Himeji is a true beauty. This is our fifth time there, and we can never get enough of it.

Against the blue sky backdrop, surrounded by Sakura in perfect bloom, and - with historically low crowds - it was a gorgeous day to be there. Some photos (and sorry for the low-quality images; FT really compresses the hell out of uploaded pics):

I did not get to do much cherry blossom viewing this year, I have a hope that Sendai has a bit to offer tomorrow....

But a rather nice tree in Shinagawa I got to enjoy the days I went to the office.

How was Sendai? We were there yesterday (the 14th), when it was supposed to be mankai (full bloom.) It was a the tail end of our Tohoku road trip that had us in Kakunodate, Lake Tazawa, Hiraizumi and Matsushima. We planned to check out Shiroishi River Tsutsumi Ichimoku Senbonzakura (白石川堤一目千本桜) and Funaoka Castle Ruins Park (船岡城址公園.) Unfortunately, it was gloomy and rainy, so we decided to pay a visit to Zao Fox Village instead.

It was really warm Saturday and Sunday, so I guess that accelerated the bloom a bit. Especially if the weather continued. Sunday was close to mankai in many locations, but still some areas with more late blooming trees that had hardly begun. The park around Sakuragaoka shrine was quite close to mankai Sunday.
