Kanazawa late October...Why so crowded?

I was considering a visit to Kanazawa 27-31 October, but I note that lodging is jam packed that weekend, particularly saturday night.

Does anyone know what's going on that weekend? I was able to secure a capsule, but I dislike crowds and might just chose to go another time depending on the reason for / nature of the crowds.

My GUESS would be that Kenroku-en, the famous garden in Kanazawa, is a prime spot for seeing fall foliage. The timing seems right.

Wow!!!

Still, I dislike crowds....

Would you guess it'll mostly be domestic tourists filling the place or busloads of international tour groups?

I guess that there will be bus-loads of tourists, domestic and foreign, being led by the nose.

It'll be all kinds, but you'll remember the Chinese tour groups most fondly.

I would prefer to avoid places that are saturated with foreign tour groups.

Will keep digging.

That ship has sailed for most of the usual tourist stops in Japan.

I'm OK with "not the usual tourist stops" as long as I can come up with something interesting to do. Other option is to just hang out in a city large enough to not be saturated by the tourists.

Angra-go to Shikoku. Other than Matsuyama, not a lot of tourist hordes

Not a bad idea. I've not yet been to Shikoku, either. Will investigate.

I see some availabilities for those dates on Rakuten, although the inventory is limited just on that Saturday.

However, if you look for rooms on check-in 29/10, check-out 31/10, there are tons of availabilities at reasonable rates. Kanazawa is a nice city. I think you should consider keeping it on your list if you were interested in it to begin with.

My favorite main island. Slower paced, fewer tourists. I always recommend at least a day or two in Kochi so you can take the main train line up and over the mountains that split the island. The ride through the river gorge is spectacular. The castle in Kochi is often less crowded than other major castles as well.

Ritsurin-koen in Takamatsu is also a must for Japanese garden aficionados. One of the finest in the world.

Ginza should just be renamed Chinatown.
