Hi all, my brother in law is visiting japan right now and I was wondering if there were any recent updates on current finds or stock that would help direct his attention and search either in the city or at the airport. Sounds like most everything is gone unfortunately.
Looking really for japan exclusives but at this point open to the AS offerings older than 12 yrs. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

My brother in law found a bottle of yamazaki LE 2016 for 10,800 yen at Keio dept store in Shinjuku yesterday.
Yamaya shinjuku had some nikka from the barrel last night. He had gone back today and all 8 bottles were gone. They also had some hakushu 18.
Mitsukoshi in Ginza had hibiki 21, yamazaki 18, and hakushu 18 all duty free versions for the 50k as noted in previous posts
Shinanoya Shinjuku had a couple bottles of the new Mars Komagatake Kohiganzakura.

Good deals on both IMHO. The airport pricing for the 21 is Y50k for comparison, same booze, fancier bottle. And my Yamazaki limited was closer to 18k when I got it.

Good, not great. Hibiki 21 officially retails for 24,400 in Japan. But its scarcity drives up the price. If you had the time and inclination, you can sometimes find it cheaper in small shops in the bar districts of major cities, or a few national retailers if they have it in stock (like Yamaya). The 2016LE is a good price since it retails for 10,000 yen. If you can get it duty free, it's even better. Happy Hunting.

Thanks for the input. I guess I will try to grab a bottle of Hibiki 21 from the local store. They had two bottles left 3 days ago. I hope it will still be there tomorrow!! They also had a bottle of Hibiki 30 for like Y300,000....

Stopped in the ANA Duty Free shop down near the NH club in the 40-ish gate range at NRT today. Typical stuff, overpriced (really, 50k JPY for Hakushu 18? Even Dekanta charges less than that, which is frightening)... but then:
I saw a couple of bottles of Kirin 18 year Oloroso finish, at the probably-too-expensive 32k JPY (given I got a bottle of Kirin 18 single malt for about 12k JPY in a department store) ... but using my MP Visa to pay part of the price (I gave 20k JPY in cash) got me 10% off. And something I haven't seen time and time again. And I wasn't tempted by the 50k JPY burning a hole in my wallet to do something stupid...
It had been a while since I trekked all the way down to that end of the terminal. I'm glad to know the ANA Duty Free shop gives 10% off for MP Visa purchases (probably do for other UA and NH credit cards, too, I suspect). Makes the 100% overpriced figures on duty-free only 80% overpriced.

Next time I've got an overnight in Tokyo I'll have to put a couple orders in to be delivered to my hotel. Thanks for the tip!

Found a couple of cases of Hakushu 12 single malt for $69 at our local costco today. Seems like a good starter bottle
Jan 7 Update: Still at least a case or more at my costco. Apparently not a popular item here.
