Still open and cart food
The above suggestions look great but are these establishments still open? I am reviving a sort of dead thread here. Any new recommendations?
Also, possibly from being a native NYer, if it is sold from a cart, I want to try it :D. Does Torino have much cart food? Is there an area the city with food stalls or walk up windows? Is my search really just about finding good traditional Trattorias (listed above). Are the HIs decent? No particular preference just the ongoing Big Win promo for extra points. Other than that, the BW looks nice. Cheers - |

Via Roma for shopping, Via LaGrange for eating. On Via LaGrange 39, near the train station (but on the other side of Corso VE is Pastificio Defilippis. Home made pasta. I was at the Universita' di Torino, and also working at a hospital in the city, and it was pretty much a consensus that this place has the best pasta in town. The featured dish changes every day, and is always amazing. Two blocks down on LaGrange is Eataly. There are a number of these restaurants, including in NYC, but it started here. Top quality authentic Italian food, somewhat pricey, but worth it. There's also a larger Eataly in the Lingotto area of Torino, but as a tourist I'd stay out of that neighborhood. Not that it's unsafe, it's just gritty and ugly. Torino is very famous for its historic coffee bars, where one can also eat. Most of them have some history going back to revolutionary days. Trolling through as many of them as you can is one of the things that visitors to Torino generally like doing. They're also famous because inside, they are incredibly ornate and gorgeous. Examples include Al Bicerin (Bicerin is the famous Torinese coffee with chocolate, and this is where it was invented.), Cafe San Carlo, Cafe Fiorio, Cafe Torino, Cafe Barati, etc. Coffee houses in Torino are unique. There is no street food, although you can get the equivalent at several street markets. But there is something Torinese that I think is a bit analogous. I've lived in and visited many different parts of Italy, and I haven't seen this anywhere else. In the evening, stroll down any of the main streets, but Via Po is the best. The bars put out a free buffet. This is nothing like cicchetti in Venice. It's not just little snacks. It depends on the bar. Some are meager, just keep walking others have outstanding pastas, vegetables dishes, regional cheeses, various meat dishes. It's not finger food, it's real food. You can buy one glass of wine and have a decent meal for the price of one glass. I find the best on Via Po and just off of it on side streets off of it. In any case, walking from Piazza Reale down Via Po to the Po River is a must, despite the food. In Piazza Carignano is the most famous gelateria, the first one in Torino, and it is where the popsicle was invented. For fine dining there are many places, easy to find. For a regional dish, during the winter months there is bagna caudal, or hot bath in the regional dialect. It's like a fondue, but you dip vegetables not into cheese, but into a seasoned olive oil bowl over a flame. Torino is wonderful, you'll have a great time. |
Yesterday evening I had a very good pizza in an exceptionally good pizzeria in the centre of Turin: Lampara; Via Andrea Doria 23. If you fancy a pizza you can't go wrong here.
