I had no email but when I login and go to the buy points page it says:

Special offer: up to 50% Bonus*
Purchase points between March 30 and April 30, 2012 and earn up to 50% more points!
Buy 1,000 - 19,000 points: get a 20% Bonus
Buy 20,000 - 29,000 points: get a 30% Bonus
Buy 30,000 - 39,000 points: get a 40% Bonus
Buy 40,000 - 50,000 points: get a 50% Bonus

So it is probably open to all.

Still pricier than 'cash and points and cancel' but these DO count for status

I'm seeing it as well.. my only question is: When they say "gift" points.. do they mean dontate to charity? Is there any way to "gift" them to a family member?

So if I buy 50K points for $575, I only need 10K more to earn/maintain Platinum?

Why pay more?

I also see the offer.
I can also confirm your Maths.

My question is, is status worthwhile - is it worth paying the extra to have them count as status credits?

I only have 30,000 ( nonh status ) in my account so I am down with the lowliest of the low.

Depends on your travel plans. If you stay a lot in HIs, Platinum can be quite helpful to enjoy the stay a bit more ..

Is this it?
Platinum status gets the room upgrade possibility, so if you purchase 40000 points and the status applies to 40k + bonus 20k, you qualify?
Maybe I have this wrong?

Why not just get the credit card? I believe it now gives you plat status for as long as you have it.

No, if you buy 50k you will get 75k with the bonus and already be Plat.

The bonus points will also count for status.

The maths is ... Buy 40k to get 60k with bonus for $460 which also gets you Plat, or buy 60k for $360 via cash and points and cancel and do not get Plat.

My suggestion:

Since its 30 Apr, wait for Discover America deal coming out soon. If PC offers what they did last year, its 60K points for $360 USD if you pay via AMEX, and the points count for status, otherwise it's $400.

If its not offered, then you'll still have the option of the above method - 50% bonus
