80% bonus points email

Did anyone else get an email from IHG inviting you buy IHG points and get up to 80% bonus points for free? The link takes you to a secure site, storefront.points.com, and you have to enter your first and last name, IHG account number, PIN and email address. I'm hesitant to do so until I know it's a legit site. The email was addressed to me personally and stated my current points balance which is correct.

So two things I'm curious about: is it a legit email and is the deal any good?

This is legit. Points purchases are processed by points.com. I got the e-mail too.

However, I don't think it's a good deal. IHG very often offers 100% bonus, which is sometimes marginally good value in very specific circumstances.

The 80% bonus works out at $5.56 per 1,000 points.

Doesn't sound legit to me.

Thanks all. I logged in and it was an anti-climax! The conversion rates are very poor.

Not "very poor" for me. Just bought 180,000 points for US$800 and booked four nights in London (three nights at 60k with 4th night free) at the new Hotel Indigo Leicester Square where even the prepaid nightly rate was over 250 GBP.

points.com processes purchases for many major loyalty schemes and has been around for years. Well established and well known.

Note that both the low cost and the 4th night free are due to benefits of the new $89 credit card. Without the credit card, 180,000 points are $1000 and not such a great deal (spending $1000 for 750 GBP of stays, and no earned points on the 750 GBP).

How did you do that? I'm quoted 100,000 pts + 80% bonus = 180k points for $1000.

Personally, buying points is like a program where points never expire. I don't spend enough time at home to require either offer.

Certainly a case of YMMV. And your math is off a bit as I'd have to pay for all four nights so it would have been over 1000GBP (approx $US1400) out of pocket for my 4 nights and not GBP750. So for me, the $US800 is a clear win.

That said, I would not have pulled the trigger on my scenario had I not already had a trip planned AND the discount benefits of the 4th night free + discount on the initial points purchase.

How did you get the 20% off for the points purchase? A statement credit after the charge posted?
