Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

That said you should be fine with a $500 a night spend over 40 nights !
yes, but at the very least you'd expect to have the Dec 27th line item?

i'd be emailing now to management.

rarely wld any experienced here expect to get from Makati! . and in fairness, they haven't got the information.

11-12K not being sufficient isn't consistent with some of our data points is it? maybe at the margin?

if i was in that position, i'd be reaching out to the other hotel groups now, with current RA in place, with request to status match, and if no joy, ask for challenges.

all the best getting status matched to those that choose that strategy.

or just stay as an Ambassador, with a view to re-qualifying. is there much difference these days, when the changes kick in? the upgrade that can vary according to the the way the wind's blowing on any particular day?

Lifetime RA after say 10 consecutive years, or 15 years accumulative would be good strategy for IHG, re business retention, make more sticky, downgraded RA's staying on to requalify.

So I checked again. It’s 11k at the conservative end and 12k if you include some of the mistakes in the qualifying spend vs total.

I am an already top or near tier with all the other major players, Hilton Diamond, Accor platinum, Marriott platinum.

Total hotel stays trays last year were over 200nights. I put 80 into IHG and of them did about a third at ICs where they were available.

I find IHGs offering the weakest of the lot but do enjoy the IC hotels. I will not be putting another year into IC when I can get better treatment from the other chains. The lack of clarity on RA qualification, no breakfast included, no club access, etc. makes it really hard
to put another 12-20k into IHG.

It is what it is and is very short sighted of IHG but I can’t do much about it.

One comment that they did make that was quite surprising was the fact they only give out a few hundred to the UK/Europe members.

Of course this will be lower than China but I find it strange to say that like it’s capped lower than the America’s, etc.

Seems correct you don't get RA then if IC-only spend is under usd10k++? Please comfirm your IC stay spend, without including non-IC IHG brand spend as with your 27/53 IC/non-IC nights split on total IHG spend of usd12k++ ,you can't have exceeded us$10k++ at IC brand itself.

o usd12,000++ (I am assuming here the 12k spend exludes taxes) at IHG, but split 16nights at IC and 64 nighrs non-IC
o with above 27/53 IC/non-IC split, I can't see your IC-only net pretax spend being anywhere near to or exceeding needed RA metric of usd10000 ie (usd10k++),
(even if non-IC nights were an unrealistically low usd50++ , that is $2650++, leaving IC only spemd too low at $9350++, if non-IC $75+ on average, then IC $8k++. non-IC=$4k++
o For RA qualification, and as published by IHG themselves as requirement, only qualifying (net of taxes) spend at IC brand (roon/f+b) towards for RA qualification

Apologies saw your first post now, where you indeed said IC only was usd11k-12k++ at IC only

Yes for 2017 and 2018 our empirical spend poll showed usd10k++ was the needed spend. If IHG raised the bar for 2019 then maybe 11k++ or 12k++ is now needed (10% or 20% more).

With the suggested by some reports of manual review by IHG this year, it may even be that IHG sensibly allow existing (or long term RAs) to qualify on less than new figure if increased but over the 2017/2018 10k++ threshhold, but then you can never accuse IHG of being sensible.

I found awardwallet to be an acceptable first shot at keeping at least a general idea of my points accounts. It is very good at preventing point expiry but is not offering enough data for serious analytics, e.g. how much spend am I doing this year compared to last, do I need to ramp up stays to achieve a certain level etc...
I sometimes wonder if it would make sense to pool some resources/effort and write the ultimate FlyerTalker Points Tracker or so. 😀
But then there's never enough time.
This is great work. Thanks. I'm going to mooch off this to write my own RA tracker for next year, hehehe.

usd13k (or usd10,800 ++ if taxes at 20% ncluded on your 13k) at IC's only (room/f+b) would have got you qualified as RA in 2017 and 2018. Hopefully will still for 2019, but you need to wait and see if IHG are raising required spend target up from usd10k++ for 2019 status.

usd15,600 (or usd13k++) at IC's only would have got you qualified as RA in 2017 and 2018. And still should get one RA for 2019

i can understand making some variables for lower price point markets, like China, but not the UK/Euro v US? seems odd.
