Friend looking to keep ihg account alive
- no activity in account for a couple of years
- has gold status and enough points that it is worth an effort to keep
- ihg credit card not possible
- stay also not possible . May not be within a couple hundred miles of an ihg account. But might be if purchase in the restaurant work for example
-- ok with buying points or transferring points to a friend or receiving points from a friend.
Prefer to keep cost relatively low and also simple, as well as to give ihg plenty of time to do the bookkeeping -- prefer to make a second attempt to keep account alive if ihg does not properly credit, thank you

My experience in a similar situation is with Southwest Rapid Rewards. A Rapid Dining Rewards purchase (which takes a week or two to post if I recall correctly) kept my Rapid Rewards points valid. Might try that route, I would think it's the same with IHG.

Your friend could make a prepaid reservation in a city with a known/trusted person who is also listed on the reservation. Second person checks in. For the cost of the cheapest room with an available friend, the stay counts.

A digital download such as an e-book would do it.
If you have a look at either of the two accelerate threads on here digital downloads have been discussed on there and e-books have been available for as low as three points and this would see activity on the account which would preserve the balance going forward.
It wouldn't preserve the gold status but it would keep the points safe.

1000 Jet Blue points can be exchanged for 600 IHG points at points.com therefore pushing out the expiration date. If you don't have a Jet Blue account, you can sign up for one and should be able to get 1000 points by futzing around collecting 'badges' on their web site to get you that number.

Does you friend have enough points for a reward night? If so then just make a reservation for one night and cancel again. That will subtract and redeposit the points.
Or make a points+cash reservation and then cancel. This will cost you the money portion, but will leave you with additional points.
Or give the night to somebody as a gift.

If they really have Gold status, nothing will expire soon. See here:
http://www.ihg.com/hotels/us/en/glob...care/member-tc
at item 15:
Expiration of points. Points do not expire unless your account becomes inactive for any period of twelve (12) months or longer. To maintain the points in your account, you must have at least one earn or redeem transaction posted to your account every twelve (12) months. If you do not keep your account active for any period of twelve (12) months or more, all of your points may expire which means your points will be removed from your account and are no longer able to be redeemed. Points in your account do not expire for all current Elite members, although all of your points may expire twelve (12) months after your account moves to Club level from an Elite level without earn or redeem activity.
Second, please explain which country this friend is based in. Different techniques are available in different countries.
