Security screening while transferring
 

Morning all

As a new kid on the block, apologies if I'm in the wrong place, but I'm hoping some of you experts on here can help with something that puzzles me.

Over the past couple of years I've noticed that when transiting from one flight to another in e.g. Dubai, Qatar, etc even though I have just got off a plane, I have to go through the full security screening before I can go to the transit area.If I was going to blow up the plane, where would I have got the bomb and why should I only plan to blow up a second plabe?

I'm sure there's a sensible answer, but it eludes me!!

Not all arriving flights at any airport come from places where thorough pre-boarding security screening can be relied on. Trying to figure out which do and which don't at any given moment, with the situation changing rapidly in many places, is an exercise in futility. The generally accepted solution is to re-screen all transfer passengers - and not just in the Middle East.

As for why a terrorist might prefer to blow up one plane rather than another: I am not an expert in their psychology, but I'm sure you can think of several reasons.

I've found almost everywhere I travel (internationally) that transfer screening is the norm. Though there are some reports of limited places where this is going away but with very specific conditions. For example it's been reported in this thread that you no longer have to go through transfer security at NRT if coming from a US flight and transferring to another international flight -- which makes sense since you know for certain where those planes came from and that all passengers went through screening in the US:

This is highly specific to origin and destination airports, so you cannot make a generalisation. Some countries consider some other countries 'clean,' others don't.

Not worth generalities.

1. Could be due to concerns about security procedures at the origin.
2. Coule be due to mixing passengers from "clean" and not clean departure points.
3. Could be due to architecture, e.g. switching terminals without a secure passage, bus, or train.

Thus, the question to OP is what specific airports and carriers?

In the USA, if you’re connecting international-international, or international-domestic, you are too. At London Heathrow traveling with connections at different terminals, even if remaining airside using the bus shuttles, you are as well. Etc. etc.

There is no sensible answer. It is just about one country trusting another country's screening.

But if you want to see where the origin of the flight really matters, look at SIN. Some flights get screened when they come in, some do not and passengers coming off just mix with the passengers getting ready to depart (SIN has security at the gate).
