If you don't need credit it really doesn't matter. If you pay cash for cars, house is paid off (or already have a good mortgage), your credit score is really just a number used to get more credit cards. If my credit score were to go from 800 to 500, all that means for me is i probably wont be approved for any more credit cards...

How many miles and points do you have?

My wife and I combined accounts or all airline miles and hotel points just passed 5 million total. We do both travel for business about once a month and play the cc game. We have been burning around 500k per year the last few years and will look to do the same or more this year.

Me - 3.4 million
Wife - 1.6 million

23 points.

Just fyi, here are plenty of "mine's bigger" threads around here, and most people don't bother with them. Don't be surprised if you get few and/or facetious answers

Hotel points (with the exception of SPG) are typically valued quite differently than airline miles, and so IMHO it makes no sense to combine hotel points and airline miles all into one total. Someone who has 4.8 million hotel points and 200,000 legacy airline miles has a much lower value of redemption than someone who has 200,000 hotel points and 4.8 million miles.

100000 miles can be redeemed for a trip that would cost $5000 cash. 100000 hotel points in a program like Marriott or Hilton is more likely to get you just 2 or 3 nights at $300++ cash hotels.

Or for another analogy, it's like having a mix of US Dollars and Mexican Pesos and saying you have XXXXXX currency units (by adding the dollars and pesos together without converting at the 1:13ish conversion rate).

I have about 1.25 million air miles across 5 (soon to be 4) airlines and 400k hotel points across 3 hotel chains.

I actually wish these balances were a bit lower as accrued miles and points are always subject to devaluation. A significant part of the reason my balances have climbed so high is that my wife and I had to postpone 2-3 nice award trips we wanted to take in the past 18 months.

Unless you have some big immediate plans, I'd feel a bit uncomfortable having that many miles/points around. As has been pointed out, hotel points can be worth a lot less than airline points.

Personally, I try to keep about 500k in airline points on hand. Hotel points really depend on what chain we're talking about. 500k SPG are worth considerably more than 500k Radisson.

That's not even taking into account the functional difference between a 5* and 2* hotel is way less than Y and F or even Y and J.

47 right now, but if I ramp up my MS I might be able to go bigtime and get to 50 by years end

englert Feb 9, 2014 6:23 pm

Over 1 million hotel points alone but with how quickly they are getting devalued I need to start spending them.

Enough points for a RTW award on AA on business class

CDKing Feb 9, 2014 8:44 pm

Im in need of a few tickets if you decide to share some of your wealth before they get devalued to much

I feel your pain. We, family of 5, had Christmas vacations booked in Thailand for each of the past two years. Premium cabin travel for each of us. Something always came up. Just locked it in for this coming December. We'll see what happens.
