My advice for Cabs is when in a major Indian city, just dial a combination of 4s and 2s and you are likely to find one :D
As for Hyderabad, I strongly recommend Sky Cabs (49494949) |
For the Chennai (MAA) area:
Fast Track - +91-(44)-2473-2020 / 2888-9999. From MAA airport, these are flat pre-paid rates based on destination. Otherwise, these work like regular metered taxis. No Bargaining required. Each taxi is independently owned and operated. Fast-Track is basically the dispatcher of the taxis. |
MAA airport:
There are now (as of Nov 2011), three pre-paid services (at least) available within the domestic arrivals and international arrivals areas: 1. "Pre-Paid Taxi" - Rates start at Indian rupees 275 (based on destination). All cars are Black Ambassadors with a cream colored top. Non Airconditioned. Nobody will escort you to the taxi. You have to find the taxi rank yourself (not too hard to find). The rates are lowest, as is it set by the tourism board, and the cars are old without AC. These cars are NOT available for hire TO the airport. (they will return to airport empty). 2. Fast-Track - Rates start at Rupees 450. You will be escorted to your car. The car type will vary from a small four door to an SUV / minivan type based on which taxi is next in line. All cars have AC. You can request a bigger car if you need to. These cars are independently owned by the drivers. They are also available for hire for city use (phone 2473-2020). 3. Aviation Express - Rates start at rupees 600. They only use bigger cars such as Toyota Innova or a Tavera or something similar. All cars have AC. They do not use small four-door cars. They are only available to / from the airport AFAIk. Not available for city-use. You will always be escorted to your particular car. The car license plate number will be assigned when you pay for it. |
Taxi Information
In Calcutta, the taxis are colored in Yellow and Black. Most of the taxis in Calcutta bear manual fare meters that are outdated. At present, the actual fare is 3 times the amount shown in these meters. The taxi driver is supposed to carry a conversion chart with the validation date clearly marked on it. Some taxis have electronic meters, for these meters, the actual fare would be 1.5 times the fare shown in the meter.
-------------- 2013 MERCEDES BENZ SL-CLASS |
I just thought I would add an experience. I've been using Uber in Bangalore on my recent work trip. The rates are very cheap and the experience has been almost uniformly great. I guess it is somewhat predicated on getting a working SIM card with data though.

Taxi
Hello Mate, i'm Ritesh from Delhi, when we required taxi services just search in Google, like Delhi Taxi Services or NCR Taki Etc.
|
The safest bet is to request an airport transfer from your hotel or homestay host family, especially as regards transfers from New Delhi International Airport or domestic airport since New Delhi is somewhat notorious for taxi scams.

You taking a taxi to train? With three of us is there a saving? Hotel is around $100 to send a taxi.
YOu mean the hotel you are staying in Delhi wants to charge you $100 for trip to Agra in a taxi? Is it one way or round trip? I'd still take the express super fast train on executive chair seat and includes free breakfast and just about 2 hour and I think it is only around $10 per passenger. I haven't taken this train, I am going to. I only heared it is a good option. It is a feel and an experience! The taxi or auto riskshaw trip from your hotel to train station would be around $2 or 150 rupee the most. IGNORE THE TAXIS or CARS offered by your hotel that are rip offs. They charge you 200% more. |

I know that you can take an Uber to Chennai Airport (MAA), but can you take an Uber from Chennai Airport into town (in my case, the Hilton Chennai)?
Edited to add: The answer is "yes". What is the fare to and from the airport? The flat fare to and from the airport has been removed and is now calculated like any other Uber ride by the distance travelled and the time taken. The fare to the airport from most parts of the city is approximately ₹400-500. This includes an automated service charge of ₹ 100 (for pickup as well as drop) to account for cess, service and misc parking fees. As usual Uber riders are neither required nor expected to give any cash to the drivers. Earlier, the rates to and from the airport were fixed at a flat rate of ₹1,200. The reason for this was that the rides to the airport removed cars from the main service areas in the city and more often than not partner-drivers did not get return trips from the airport back into the city. In making this change we took into account rider feedback as well as our economics. As we scaled and improved our service in the city this change became feasible from a supply and economics perspective. At these rates anyone can enjoy an affordable Uber airport experience. Where can Uber be used in the city? Uber can be used anywhere within Chennai city limits and for the airport. We currently do not service areas outside Chennai, especially places like Mahabalipuram, Sriperambudhur, Pondicherry et al. |
Well nowadays just get the ola cab app and then you can book the taxi.

Uber works very well in New Delhi. I was just in New Delhi and spent almost 2 weeks there, I used my US based iPhone, and I was able to use my Uber app without any problems whatsoever. The only only problem is the driver has some difficulty calling you back because my number was an international dial from India

Mrs Up In The Air is travelling alone to Bangalore and is looking for taxi options. (She has travelled in India on a number of occasions and is confident, but wishes to have a plan for getting from the airport to Bengaluru.)
Does Uber operate from BLR to the city? Since the last postings, are there any new reliable taxi services that operate in India and from BLR? Any relevant info. or advice much appreciated. |
Uber and Ola are available. At peak times waiting time from landing can be 45 mins from arriving at the gate. I have never tried the ride later option which could be OK, if sure when taxi is required. The Airport taxis are good (better than either of the above in my opinion). All of the above will cost about INR 800-900 including toll to the centre, possibly more when busy traffic. Waiting time for Airport taxis in my experience is less than with Uber and Ola.
Generally I am met by the company vehicle, but late at night I sometimes book a taxi inside airport. There are many choices, waiting time 2-3 mins (if one has no vehicles go to the next) and cost about INR 1,600 including toll to the centre. |

Are there any guidelines regarding getting an airport taxi at BLR? Are there obvious places in arrivals to book a legitimate airport taxi? (The concern is the possibility of arriving tired from a long flight and being approached by people touting unofficial taxis.) Where should my wife head to and what should she look out for when coming through arrivals? Again, any advice greatly appreciated. |
Before exiting the airport there are several companies with counters facing the exit. These are the companies that charge INR 1,600 incl toll. If I choose one of these companies I select one with minimal waiting time.
The Airport taxis are on the left hand side after exiting the airport. There is a single queue for 2 companies providing AC taxis. Both of the above are easy to locate and staff will assist if your wife is not sure where to go. I have never had a problem with taxi drivers coming from the airport, neither with taxi or rickshaw drivers in the city. Another option is to get a hotel pick up, which will probably cost more. |
No activity on this thread for a very long time! At Bangalore airport, I am curious to know whether it is better to opt for a metered public taxi or a prepaid taxi from or Ola / Uber, for an early evening arrival. Destination will be the ITC Windsor Hotel.

Best ride option at DEL
Hi all, what's the current thinking on best option from Del term 3 to Connaught area hotel? I haven't been to India in 10 years. Is Uber they way to go? Are prepaid taxis still a good option? Thx!

Both Uber or perpaid taxis are good options. Both easily available & should roughly cost the same.
Drop off at the airport with uber was fine and I did it twice in November . Remember to take a uber XL if you have luggage . Most normal taxis in Delhi seem to run on CNG gas and hardly have any boot space.. Your luggage ends up on the roof !!! And won't be great if it rains etc. These days I use MERU cabs from the prepaid taxi counter and found the service very good even though they cost slightly more than ola and uber .. |

Do they allow uber to pick up passengers from the DEL T3 terminal itself these days? . I last used uber to travel from the airport maybe 4 or 5 years ago. The driver made me walk across to another parking lot . ( was not easy with luggage )
At one point Uber was trying out a system where you did not have a pre-assigned cab but just took the first waiting cab. Seemed a good idea for a busy airport, I don't know if they still have it. I don't recall how they handled the different cab sizes. |

That's okay then at DEL ... In COK the local taxi union doesn't even allow uber in the vicinity of the airport for pick up.
in fact it's worse even a non local taxi driver coming to pick someone up could end up in trouble. A taxi driver who we have known for a very long time used his friend's private car and came to pick up a family member .The union members kicked up a fuss. So it's a bit like the CIA / MI5 . We still don't know how they found that out. We suspect that they keep some database/ photos etc of taxi drivers who drop off people at the airport. Prepaid taxi service at COK is run by families of those who gave up their land for the airport. I think that was the agreement at the time..So they are very territorial.. |
Have a trip planned and looking for help/suggestions on a transfer to Agra from Delhi and also the reverse after a couple of days stay. Would Uber in both directions be an easy option? Any input welcome.

Uber 'intercity' is a good option. If you are doing a day trip with a visit to the Taj you are better off asking your hotel to organize a car with a driver and guide.
