where r u checking in? at NYC/EWR I've never had an issue with bags at around 25-27kgs.
BOM has become seriously painful on luggage and the attitude of staff at BOM INTL is abysmal.

slightly off from the OPs post but a related question.
I am doing BOM-BRU-JFK on Jet J at the end of the month and checking into a Delta flight JFK-SEA shortly. Both are ticketed separately. While my 9w allowance says 69 kg for BOM-BRU as Keyser noted earlier, the BRU-JFK leg states 3 bags of 23 kgs each. On the next legs with Delta, I am eligible for 2 bags of 32 kgs each. I am planning to carry only 2 checked bags My question is, a) will 9w be flexible in checking in bags which may be 30 kgs each approx to bring them into JFK b) can I through check in bags all the way to SEA with 9w here itself in BOM? TIA LH F not available, therefore need the baggage allowance on Jet, therefore considering Jet over LH. Will Jet in BOM let us slide? Don't want to take a risk and have to deal with dimwits at BOM... |

Yaatri the JFK-SEA trip was an afterthought to the BOM-JFK plan, so booked it separately online. Outwards, I am doing JFK-CVG-SEA and here are the rules that apply to me as per Delta on Y:
For travel within or between the United States and Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico and all travel to Brazil: SkyMiles Medallion® Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond members, Million Milers, SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus members, and Alaska Air MVP & MVP Gold Members traveling in Economy may check up to two bags up to 70 lbs (32 kg) each at no charge on Delta and Delta Connection operated flights. If we used up all our allowance (4 plats travelling in business class would be 12 suitcases) when travelling together as family, we would need a small truck to carry the luggage. |

I have never transited in the U.S. from one airline to another when they were not in the same alliance and hence operated from the same terminal, QA and AA, for example. How do you handle your baggage in your situation? Jet Airways operates in terminal 8 while DL operates in 2-3 and 4. Does DL have representation.

you have to clear customs & the take your bags to the next terminal....they are tagged on to the final destination so the airline doesn't question the allowance since they know you just came off an international flight....

That's not what I meant. What I meant was whther the airline for yor onward connection would have a baggage drop off facility after customs. The airline with your onward connection might be departing from a different terminal, as is the case with 9W and DL.

No problems whatsoever. Jet ground service was outstanding as always.

Edited to Add: Anyone want to advise on BOM baggage in paid J/C to EWR? Is it worth taking the risk? Anyway, got F seats on *A...but just in case I need a backup... |

i know for a fact that aa has a baggage drop off facility as soon as you come out of customs....its been a couple of years since i was on an immediate connecting flight with delta so i don't remember whether they have one or not....will keep a look out next time i am there....
If your onward connection is on an airline from the same alliance on which you flew in, chances are it will have a presence in that terminal. I have never had the need to use a different airline for onward U.S. connection than the one I fly in to the U.S. on, I have not noticed whether other airlines have counters after customs in DL terminals, for example. DL has baggage drop of counter in its terminals (2, 3 and 4). I have not seen any other airline counters there. |

I think you are still missing the point. I am talking about a situation when your onward flight s operated by an airline that does not operate from the terminal in which you arrive and go through immigration and customs.

If you're connecting on any other airline (DL/B6/UA), you'd need to proceed to that respective terminal. |

Got off from MAA-BRU-JFK about 2 months ago and connected to ORD on AA. 9W uses terminal 8 at JFK and there is baggage drop-off only for AA immediately after customs.
If you're connecting on any other airline (DL/B6/UA), you'd need to proceed to that respective terminal. Jet Airways is being foolish by not joining an alliance. Based on criticism I had heard of AI, I was reluctant to travel by AI, but found it to be quite good. I am not about to throw my money down the train by travelling on a carrier that doesn't allow me to earn miles on my FF programme. |

I doubt that DL has a presence in terminals in which it has no departures or arrivals. It makes little sense to cater to travellers significant portion of whose journey has been completed on another airline, which is not a proper partner or a part of the alliance. I would hate to have to carry my luggage from one terminal to another, especially after a long flight. it's especially difficult for people travelling with little children. |

Just confirmed with Jet BOM airport personnel - they won't let anything go above 25kgs. - this is where *A wins out...
