Good pro-active response from Jet. ^

BTW, wouldn't the flight path from ATH to YYZ/NYC still involve flying over Northern Europe? Or will they fly a southerly route over the Med and then enter over the Atlantic on a latitude well below UK/Ireland....

Good question. Would be interested to know the answer to this too.

I believe it would... doesn't ETOPS require flying via Iceland & Greenland? Or is there another route?

Western Iceland is all clear, so I would imagine they're skimming along the Mediterranean, then taking a more northerly track toward Iceland and Greenland once they get around Spain in order to satisfy ETOPS. The ash cloud isn't much west of the British Isles. Come to think of it, the Azores might be able to satisfy ETOPS requirements alone. Planes fly MIA to Europe all the time with no issue.

Stupid question, but if this affects the actual miles flown (higher or lower than current routes via BRU), can / should 9W not go with actuals? I know they won't, just a crazy thought...

Another question, will 9W pick up any revenue passengers in ATH? or just a fuel stop?, as if its just for the sake of operating & clearing backlog of passengers for INDIA-North America traffic couldn't they have flown via Pacific? using HKG Hub(I know its the East Coast, but could the 9W B77W's do HKG-YYZ, EWR) I believe CX & AC do HKG-YYZ nonstop...(so clearly they could have negoiated something with HKG authorities, if possible)??

Just curious to know, as I was watching NDTV and DEL was packed with stranded passengers off to YYZ, EWR via Europe and this was 2 days ago... Only if there still was the short lived route via PVG-SFO...

Via ATH it works out at 8049 mi and via HKG it works out at 8932. Thats close to 2,000 miles per r/t trip. Lot more fuel burnt. Guess thats why they picked via ATH

Also they get to keep the one hub which will work out cheaper in terms of logistics.

cheers, just looked it up on great circle as well... plus I guess as previous posts suggest 9W was looking at establishing a hub in ATH, so that might be early.... I guess AI is just waiting it out than, lols maybe we could ask them try via HKG since they do not have any hubs in Europe..

Don't they use FRA as a mini hub?
