Interesting. Not sure. Don't they fly over the north pole? I wonder if they are effected.

Flight stats seems to suggest that they are.

Right - I agree.

I guess they could start it back up again if they wanted, provided they still retained the permissions.

Via ATH it works out at 8049 mi and via HKG it works out at 8932. Thats close to 2,000 miles per r/t trip. Lot more fuel burnt. Guess thats why they picked via ATH

Also they get to keep the one hub which will work out cheaper in terms of logistics.

Yes, and I think it's brilliant that they had this backup plan and actually implemented it! ^

I doubt it. But I did read in todays news that they carried out a test flight yesterday and there were no problems reported. Same with KLM.

AF is doing a test today. I wonder what this means as apparently they are loosing millions daily and without any confirmed news on when they can fly I think they are looking at all options.

LH has flown 10 aircraft from MUC to FRA. 9 at low altitude, and 1 through the "troubled" area.

A BA 747 test flight is in the air at this moment, with the CEO onboard as well.

No, they have not.

Just called the international line, and the recording stated that they are using Athens as a technical stop to NYC/YYZ, no passengers exchanged on these flights, during the volcano period.

if people went to bom or del or lhr or fra or ams or cdg, there would be so many foreign airlines there, the pictures would be amazing....i would love to see the lhr, bom, del ones :)

also when flights start up, will airlines be able to have more than their original number of flights to get all pax back home.

Well, airlines normally only have a certain number of planes and also a fixed amount of slots available at both the origin and destination airports, so it would be a bit difficult!

Todays newspaper update: The government is in talks with Greece to grant ‘third and fourth freedom’ rights to Indian passengers to disembark at Athens and take another flight or train to Europe.

I read somewhere that if the plane is at flying altitude, it can go over the ash. So the 9W flights from Athens to East Coast should be able to fly over Continental Europe.

But if there is an emergency, where would they land?

I doubt one can fly over the ash - both the KLM and the BA flight were at high altitudes when they were affected, as I recall...
