My experience is that if you try to re-register a card that is on another partner that card will be automatically dropped from the first program.
VIP status is not transferrable.

I echo what Jailer said. I've got various cards registered with WN, UA, and DL. UA and DL count their visits towards VIP separately. WN doesn't have tiered earning, but gives you a lump of 300 points after each 1,000. And no, you can't have the same card in more than one program.

Hmmm...what happens if you re-register ALL cards from one network to another? Based on what has been said above, the card(s) automatically drop from the first program--so what if that number of cards actually drops to zero?
Lets say for example you move all 3 cards from Southwest to Delta...Do you in any way become unregistered with that program entirely? Are there any other possible adverse affects like losing VIP credit for dines for that year if your card count drops to zero, etc?
Basically...do you NEED at least one "place holder" card attached to a given network at all times to keep it active/in-good-standing? Personal experience is appreciated

Finally, The computer will not allow you to remove all credit cards from a program. The last CC will remain registered.

Yes, you need a place holder for each program. By the way, you can even use old expired credit cards as long as they have different account numbers. If you do not have old CC numbers, you can use gift cards from Amex, Visa or MasterCard as well.
