Labor issues in Boston
I don't know how much publicity this has gotten outside of Boston. Nor do I wish to bash Hyatt - they are one of my favorite chains and I've had at least some status with them for decades. But I do like to know about labor issues when I'm picking a hotel to stay in, so...
Hyatt has terminated about 90 housekeepers from its Boston properties (I assume the Regency downtown, the Harborside at Logan, and the Hyatt in Cambridge on the river, but I am not sure about the last one) and replaced them with outsourced labor from out of state. The laid off housekeepers were largely minority women earning about $15/hr. The replacements get on the order of half that and no benefits. The town is rather in an uproar about this, taxis threatening to boycott the properties, etc. |
Already being discussed here:
Boston/Cambridge Hyatts replace housekeepers with cheaper, outsourced workers |
Please continue discussions in the referenced thread - I'm locking this thread for housekeeping purposes.
