Hyatt Will Not Honor Rsvs in CA properties from out of state travelers
I just received an e-mail from Hyatt stating that they will not honor reservations at all Hyatt properties in California from out-of-state residents except those who are considered "essential workers, are traveling to care for a vulnerable person, or who will stay for a minimum of 14 days". This is due to new restrictions imposed by the state due to COVID. I'm not sure how they will enforce any of this\.

I have a reservation for Saturday night this weekend, and I called the hotel to find out whether they would let me stay (I am a California resident). Hotel told me they would honor my reservation, but they were not accepting new reservations except for folks deemed essential. I guess this will be the norm for the next 3 weeks, at least.

I received the same notification from Hyatt.
My stay in LA was dec 10 to dec 11. i work in financial services so CA seems to consider us as “essential workers”. But this is not a business trip anyway. The last minute cancellation sucks. airBNB to the rescue! |

I really sympathize with the properties trying to deal with the ever-changing governmental policies.
As a practical matter, there's no meaningful way to enforce the "essential worker" or "traveling to care for a vulnerable person" restrictions, at least not consistent with American cultural and political norms. |
wonder if Marriott and/or Hilton are following suit. I was at the Hyatt LAX last week. i dodged a bullet.

Except as otherwise required by law, no hotel or lodging entity in California shall accept or honor out of state reservations for non-essential travel, unless the reservation is for at least the minimum time period required for quarantine and the persons identified in the reservation will quarantine in the hotel or lodging entity until after that time period has expired. This should also apply to Airbnb. |
Oof just came across this thread. Have an overnight planned in SJC otw to HI. Last year we stayed at the HH SJC and it was easy to get there, sleep, and leave first thing in the morning. I had called the property several nights ago and they said it was at each guest's risk. So I guess we will see....

Santa Clara County and a couple of the other counties in the Bay Area are under modified SAH orders proactively even though the state isn't requiring them to shut down at this point since they haven't met the threshold. San Mateo County chose not to go along with this. Also unique to Santa Clara County is a quarantine requirement if one is coming in from an origin > 150 miles and spending the night in the county with some exceptions.
With the original shut down order in March, there was no governmental enforcement of any hotel stay restrictions. There were anecdotal reports of some properties asking you to sign a certification that your travel qualified for an exception. Grand Hyatt SFO is a top of list fav and go-to for SFO long layovers or day before positioning flights, I know many employees there by first name basis, hate to hear this for their sake :( The Hyatts in Turkey, Costa Rica, Mexico, and various US locations could not have been more thrilled to welcome my wife and I, so that they can feed their families. They (humans who depend on working to survive) have already been devastated by the insanity. I await, one, single, credible study ("science") that confirms hotels doing business causes covid increases. I have personally seen the damage the "lockdowns" cause. History will judge the sheep very harshly for this mess.
I make it a point to tip everyone far higher than I ever have, and I sleep soundly at night knowing my travels support working families. |
Is transit an exception for the CA rules? Surely there are a lot of overnight connections to/from international flights and CA doesn't want to lose that business for their airports. In addition, more people are allowing more time at major airports like SFO and LAX for COVID-19 testing, including before travel to Hawaii.
BTW, is AirBnB considered lodging? Logic would say yes, but they might argue that it's more like renting a furnished apartment or even house guesting with someone you know (like couch surfing). |

There are plenty of foreign travellers in California. Are they going to kick them all out or refuse a reservation? That won't go over well.

But I would focus on mask compliance and any additional restrictions would be narrowly tailored to address known high risk activities (like indoor drinking and dining). I find the views of Scott Morrow (San Mateo County Health Officer) on this subject particularly compelling. He's declined to go along with the knee-jerk scientifically unsupported decisions by other Bay Area health officers because he doesn't believe the science justifies the economic harm. And that imposing scientifically unsupported, nanny-state restrictions just causes people to tune out and ultimately decreases compliance with restrictions that do matter. |

Maybe...if it actually was a law. It's just an executive order put out by Newsom. Thanks for this. I was looking for a "staycation" type thing to get out of my house. I guess I will just have to hop a plane now. :) |

I just called Squaw Creek Resort as the Tahoe area will undergo the stay at home order this coming Friday. Apparently reservations are not being changed at this time, and the resort is discussing what to do. :(

I’ve got a (robo)call from Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite today saying they are closed until 12/27, so my Christmas reservation will not be honored. CA resident.

I am a California resident currently writing this post from a California Hyatt property. Nobody gave me any problems. From what I can tell, if your credit card runs through, you are essential.

That's pretty much my feeling as well. I do not believe hotels are going to question non-resident guests other than ask something like "Please initial / sign here."
