Hamburg or Mainz
Planing a long weekend in Germany -- which hotel is better; which city is more interesting?
|
Hyatt Mainz is great, especially if you have a view of the Rhine. Easy to also drive along the Rhine, Mosel is a little farther away. Easy rail tarsnport from FRA. Have not stayed Hamburg.

Hyatt Regency Mainz is a great hotel, I stayed there two times and it was really nice. Heard great things about the Park Hyatt HAM, too. Hamburg is the nicer city, though http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Hamburg is the nicer city, though Being from Hamburg you have to say that :-) Both are real nice, the Mainz Hyatt has a nicer view, but the RC service is not great. Hamburg Hyatt is very nice and has a great Rc, the best German RC is in Berlin so. |

My longest stay in any hotel was in the Hyatt Regency Mainz, and it is wonderful. With the exception of the Christmas holidays, I lived there from June 1999 through June 2000, and loved every minute of it. Definitely get a Rhineview room. The shower and bathroom alone are worth it! If you like contemporary design, all of the Hyatts in Germany are great.
The restaurant in Mainz is wonderful though--the kitchen is open so you can see everything going on, the buffet breakfast with anything made to order can't be beat, and you have to have the rack of lamb for dinner one night if you fancy that kind of thing--I had it a couple dozen times, and they change the recipe slightly every so often ;-) The RC is always well stocked with beverages, although I will concede that the evening munchies aren't always the best, and the breakfast doesn't compare to downstairs, of course. You can make it down to the Heidelberg castle in less than an hour, and to trendy Wiesbaden in ten minutes. The market in downtown Mainz--a five minute walk from the Hyatt--is great as well. The restaurants surrounding the hotel can keep you busy for a good month. Be sure to stroll around and then ask for recommendations. I'll let others who know it better cheer for Hamburg, as it is wonderful as well, but Mainz is like a second home for me as of late! |
The Mainz restaurant is definately better
than Hamburg and Berlin, especially for the Sunday brunch, that you shouldn't miss. The same sandwiches every evening in the Mainz RC are really boring and nothing fancy. In Berlin, they serve cakes in the afternoon and have a cold and sometimes warm buffet in the evening in the RC. |
And way OMNI, Hamburg is also the original home of the hamburger too! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I think it was in the 1300's! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif It was usually served raw as well i believe

I will be staying at the Mainz Hyatt the last weekend in Feb. Judging from the reviews of the hotel in this thread I am looking forward to a great stay. Does anyone have recommendations for things to do and places to eat in the Mainz area and is there anything else I should know about?
Thanks |
If you really stay the last weekend of February it is Fassenacht here, so no
problem what to do ! |
Applefan: If you like I can get some costume
ball tickets for you. |

Peter,
Sorry for the late reply. I got home Monday afternoon from FRA. I really liked the Mainz Hyatt. I got a nice room on the Regency floor facing the river. Fantastic view. I have to agree with the remarks about the RC in this thread. The food was ok but rather sparse. Also, the club is not open at all during the afternoon. It's only open for breakfast and for two hours at night. The only other negative remark I have for the hotel is that I never received a diamond ammenity. I got a cold walking around in the cold and snow (I'm from Texas) so I didn't do all that much on this trip. It seemed that most carnival activities in Mainz were on Monday so I didn't see much of that. I did see a parade on Sunday in Wiesbaden. |

I wish I had seen this thread before your visit to Mainz. Having stayed there several times I have learned to remember to ask the check in staff to program my key card for the RC. (They usually do, but sometimes forget).
Even though the RC is "closed" during the day you are invited to access it with your key. It is kept replenished with drinks and snacks all day. Maybe this will help others who visit. And I have to agree with the comment above, I love the bathroom design of the Mainz hotel. |
