Mongering in Mongkok

I have a stop over in HKG and wondering if there are any suggestions to have fun in HKG, I plan on taking the MRT to Mongkok and doing some shopping along with some entertainment?

Suggestions?

rkkwan recommends Portland Street :)

First, it's MTR not MRT. Second, you can't even take the regular MTR from the airport, and a going from airport to MK requires some sort of transfer. Better to take A21 bus, direct.

As for entertainment on Portland St, this is not the right forum.... ;)

HK-MTR, SG-MRT.

Any mention of streets named after an Oregon city will get the thread shut down by the mods.

You need to define what type of entertainment you are seeking.

The street is not named after a US city.

Street was there before the US city. It is an attempt at getting a name across to Americans.

Best "entertainment" in Mong Kok can be found at 8 Argyle Street...shop L9 03-11. (OT: can't believe they changed the name/owner of this place again!)

Not bad of a location to get some shopping done at the same time too.

Are you sure about that? Portland, OR was named after Portland, ME, which predates HK's rise to any sort of relevance.

The history of HK/MK - Portland St was the old Kowloon "port land". It was the old waterfront where loading and unloading of maritime freight occurred just like Connaught Rd W in Shueng/Sai Wan.

In many cities with British roots with a port you will find a Portland St. In Toronto there is a Portland St where the old port circa 1800's was.

If you're taking the MRT, Orchard Road is worth a stroll. Bukit Timah is nice for the greenery also.

Pardon my ignorance, can you give me directions as to where Orchard Road is in HK?

But that's easily accessible if you're already on the MRT. If on the other hand, you're on the MTR, you probably need to take it to the airport and then fly to where you can get on the MRT.

Don't think so. It is named after Duke of Portland, of England. It is just west of Nathan Rd, so not reclaimed land, and not near the water.

Wasn't Shanghai St the old original Kowloon water front and everything west of Reclaim St "reclaimed"?
