I passed security check in HKG from TPE going to PVG with wine purchased in TPE without any problem on 3/7/2012. My duty free wine was sealed with receipt inside.

I'm bumping this up in the hope that someone can give me some up-to-date feedback.

My question:

Tomorrow I'm flying Dublin-Heathrow-HKG-Guangzhou. I want to bring a couple of bottles of Irish whiskey as presents for the people I'm meeting. I can buy these in DUB duty-free and they'll be put in tamper-proof see-through bags, and I know that LHR security will let me bring them onto the LHR-HKG flight (same-day duty-free purchase within the EU).

What about when I arrive in HKG and need to clear transit security for my flight to CAN?

The HKIA website is pretty encouraging but not definitive:

Q21. Can transfer passengers bring their liquid items purchased at the airport at their previous port of call or on board aircraft through the transfer security screening point at HKIA?

Yes, if such items are in containers no larger than 100ml and placed in a tranparent re-sealable plastic bag with maximum capacity of 1 litre .

Liquid purchases that are in excess of 100ml may be allowed through the security screening point at HKIA upon satisfactory checks if they meet the following requirements:
purchased from airports which have implemented the new requirements on the control of liquids (passengers are advised to check with their airlines on local requirements adopted at different countries) ; or
purchased on board Hong Kong registered aircraft (Cathay Pacific Airways, Hong Kong Dragon Airlines, Hong Kong Express Airways and Hong Kong Airlines); or
purchased on board non-Hong Kong registered aircraft whose previous port of call is an airport which has implemented the new requirements on the control of liquids; and
liquid purchases are packed in a sealed plastic bag that is both tamper-evident and display satisfactory proof of purchase on the day(s) of the journey.

NOTE: Individual destinations or airlines may have different requirements on the carriage of liquids, aerosols and gels. Please check with your airlines or travel agents in advance.
I don't want to run the risk of having a couple of nice bottles of whiskey confiscated, so unless I'm feeling certain, I'm more likely to buy the whiskey duty-paid in a normal store in Dublin and pack it (well!) in checked baggage.

Can anyone give me any guidance on whether HKIA security will definitely allow my purchase through? I think they probably should; I can imagine there are lots of transit passengers e.g. UK-HKG-Australia who would be very disappointed otherwise; but I don't know what these "new requirements on the control of liquids" are, I have learnt that applying common-sense reasoning to airport security is a recipe for disaster, and the use of the word "may" in the above text leaves some uncertainty!

Thanks!

UK-HKG-Australia is NOT allowed. Australia like the USA prohibits large bottles of liquids in carry-on - unless (like in Singapore) they have been provided at the gate by the DF company.

However - back to your issue... I took a bottle of wine through HKG transit - in tamper proof bag with receipt inside - it was allowed no problems (from Australia and continuing to China)

What are the latest experiences with this? I've read a lot of conflicting reports.

I'm hoping to pick up a couple of bottles in Dubai on a DXB-HKG-AKL trip. Am I likely to succeed?

The HKIA website sounds promising:
Starting from 13 August 2018, all transfer passengers at HKIA travelling with LAGs contained in tamper-evident sealed plastic bags are required to go through enhanced security screening by a specialised LAGs screening equipment at the transfer passenger security screening points.

In some cases, the LAGs in the sealed plastic bags will have to be removed from the bags for screening. When cleared, the LAGs will be repacked in a new tamper-evident sealed plastic bag provided by HKIA.
