For flights departing to the US, there's secondary screening for carryon luggage & passport checks at the boarding gates ... Yes, that bottled juice, sports drink or soda that you just brought inside the secured airside terminal's shops cannot be taken onto the plane

Why is that? I've flown back to the US from overseas (MUC and SYD) in the past few months, both of which have "secondary" screening at the US departure gates, and they didn't care a bit about liquids bought airside.

That information might be a bit dated and restrictions might be relaxed now. When flying CO HKG-EWR in September, they required that all liquids (even those bought airside) be disposed of before boarding the plane.

I flew back to the states Christmas eve 2010. The poor guy in front of me had to give up his unopened bought air side bottle of water at the secondary screening by the plane before boarding.

On the secondary screening, it's more likely done because it's a US carriers. I fly UA between HKG-SIN fairly regularly (last trip in November) and was screened at the jetway as usual. (It's been this way ever since the no-liquids rule took effect.)

HK security is very efficient. It never took me longer then five minutes. Some of the fellow travelers aren't!

Watch out to not be in line with a big family ahead of you. (I don't stereotype but Indian, Middle Eastern, etc. families tend to be very large and to take forever)

The fast security I was talking about refers to Terminal 1. In Terminal 2 (budget airlines) it is rather the other way around, also they are very strict in enforcing the rules over there.

Flew HKG-SFO back in January, and had to drink up all the beer accidentally sneaked out of RCC at the secondary screening checkpoint. No liquids other than 3-1-1 compliant. Empty bottles were allowed through.

Don't know, and I want to know the reason behind as well. But I can tell you, HKG is not the only airport has secondary security just to search for liquids, there are other airports in Asia like ICN and NRT do the same. (NRT sometimes just pick and search randomly)

Right, even flying UA ICN-NRT only, and not connecting to the US, there is secondary security screening as well at ICN just to search for liquids.

But then at NRT no matter what airlines you are getting in, connecting to, at the connecting flights security check point, those Japanese security agents will keep asking "drinks ? drinks ?"
