Redeem points for a room if I'm not one of the guests?

Hey, can I redeem hilton honors points for one of my family members to stay? But I won't be traveling with them... I didn't see a way for me to change the guest name during the reservation... I tried looking at the FAQ both on the hilton site and on this forum, but haven't found the info I need, sorry to trouble you!

You certainly can do this but you have to ring Hhonors. You are allowed to book Awards for family or friends and it's in their T & C. Done it numerous times.

Just call Honors to book the room. You can book a room for anyone with your points. The Honors call center will book the room, pull the points from your account, and attach the certificate to the reservation.

Take what you read with a pinch of salt

cfischer,
When you see a response like this take it for what it is worth. Absolutely nothing.

My experience has been 100% the opposite. Over the past year I have done this at 3 different hotels when Mrs BeachyHead and Miss BeachyHead were visiting colleges. I booked on line and gave Mrs BeachyHead the printout of the reservation to take with her. I did call ahead to the hotel to let them know that my wife would be checking in and not me. The hotels did state that wasn't necessary but it wouldn't hurt to do so.

Side question: will this stay be counted toward the recipient's elite qualifying stay?

The Reward may be issued to the HHonors member, or to any other person, as directed by the Member. Once issued, the Reward is not transferable and may be used only by the individual named on the Reward. If a person other than the individual named on the Reward documentation attempts to redeem the Reward, the Reward will be deemed void and accommodations and/or transportation will be denied.

A "stay" is defined as the total number of consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, whether or not a guest checks out and checks back in again. The term "stay" under these Terms and Conditions does not include any stays of the following nature: wholesale/tour operator packages; contracted airline crew rates; travel agency discount rates; packages exclusively for Las Vegas Hilton casino player card holders; Team Member Travel rates, Hilton Family Travel Rates; stays secured utilizing Hilton Grand Vacations Club and Hilton Club timeshare programs, Hilton Grand Vacations marketing packages with a sales presentation requirement; complimentary or barter rooms; Reward Stays (as defined herein); NET Group rates; Series Group or IT Group rates; contracted Entertainment or Encore rates; third party websites bookings (irrespective of rate paid); and "opaque" channel bookings where the brand may or may not be known at the time of purchase. Stays booked via "opaque" channels where the brand is unknown at the time of purchase are not Eligible Stays for the purpose of earning points, miles or stay credit toward Elite tier status, or the receipt of Elite tier benefits such as upgraded accommodations / amenities or access to health clubs. HHonors points may not be earned for ineligible stays or during ineligible stays, including without limitation, folio charges incurred during ineligible stays. If at least one night of the Member's stay is consumed with the use of HHonors Rewards points, the entire stay is considered a "Reward Stay" and no HHonors points may be earned, except that if Member is using Room Upgrade Rewards, any money spent on the original reservation will earn points and/or miles consistent with these Terms. Participating hotel will determine whether incidental charges incurred during either or those stays are eligible for points, except that Points will not be earned for incidental charges at Hampton Inn®, Hampton Inn & Suites®, Homewood Suites by Hilton®, and Home2 Suites by Hilton®.

It looks like cordelli post the actual HH terms. So reward stays longer count towards earned nights.

I should have mentioned though despite the change in the wording to imply you will not get credit, recent posts show people getting stay credit for reward stays.

Yes, but... a person will generally not get any stay credit if the award is given to another person and that person, not the HHonors account owner, stays, at least in my experience.

And it is quite easy to grant another a stay - merely call, they can email the award booking to the HHonors account holder (or directly to the traveler, though I do this to assure everything is correct).

I have to appologise to the OP. I mis-read your post and thought you asked about EARNING HH points for your familiy members' stay (which is not possible).

REDEEMING your points for a stay for your relatives is (of course) possible. Just call HH.

I do this frequently for my adult kids. I make the reservation and in the place for comments I simply say "guest is and give the name of whoever will be checking in". I usually give the hotel a call to give them a heads up and invariably they will not only say it is not necessary to call, they always give my guests the same treatment they would me as a Diamond member and I always get the stay and points credit. Maybe I have just been lucky, but it always seems to work.

To guarantee the booking, do you have to give your credit card or your guest credit card details?

The guest staying will have to have a credit card in their name at check in, unless you plan to do a credit card authorization form for the guest to use your credit card.

You can make the stay with your credit card and have the guest to call back in with the confirmation number to change to card number or leave yours on file until they check in at the hotel (it will be changed then). However, if the guest does not go (for whatever reason), then your card will get charged for the no show penalty (1nt. rate + taxes).
