Cancellation Policy ?

What's the cancellation policy with Hertz? (First time user)
The policy is only giving me "prepaid" reservation, not pay at counter.

Looking to book Manager Special at DCA, but if I don't get a car that I like from Carfirmation. I'll fall back on my full size Enterprise reservation. Just wanting to give Hertz a try. :)

C. CANCELLATIONS

2. A full refund of the prepaid reservation will be made:

a. If the cancellation is made within 7 days of the original booking time;
b. Less an administrative fee as per table below if the cancellation is made after 7 days of the original booking time:

No cancellation charges, although there may be a 'no-show' charge if you go past the time - I'm genuinely not sure.

In europe

If you pre pay and cancel it after more than 7 days there is a charge.

In The USA

Changes to a reservation must be done at Hertz.com using the "Modify/Cancel" option. Any changes to the reservation may impact the rental charges. If a prepaid reservation is cancelled more than 24 hours before the pickup time, a $50 cancellation fee will be assessed. If the prepaid reservation is cancelled within 24 hours before the pickup time, a $100 fee will be assessed. If the customer does not cancel the reservation prior to the time of pick-up and the rental vehicle is not picked up on the rental date, the entire prepaid amount will be forfeited.

Penalties also depend on which country's site is used to make the booking. e.g. If booked for USA though Australia, then the AU rules apply which allow for cancellation for free within 7 days with an AUD70 fee after that

On a prepaid reservation, there is a fee (I think it's like 50% or something) if you cancel or modify within a certain time frame.

On a pay-later (pay at counter) reservation, there's no fee to modify or cancel your reservation. If you don't cancel by the time of pick-up, you'll have to go to the counter or call reservations to have it canceled.

A few times, I've forgotten about a pay later reservation, and was never charged.

What happens if no-showing on a Hertz reward rental reservation? Do the points get wiped out, and/or is there some other kind of applicable charge?

Points get wiped out, no other charge.

So how does this work when I "pay later" but hertz charges me in advance - still the same (refund if not picked up)? One of the local hertz here sometimes charges me and prints my reservation the day before. I'm in a very dynamic situation right now, and I need to be able to fallback on a rental, but that could change by tomorrow.

Does it actually charge you or does it just take an authorisation hold? Most places take holds at start of rental and then charge at the end

Either way, unless there is a cancellation rule associated with the booking that would impact this, then you would get the money returned if it has been charged

I’m sure it’s just the authorization amount, but at major locations, that first charge comes up when I rent the vehicle l. At the local editions, they sometimes run it in the morning the day of or even earlier, and I also get a notification of my assigned vehicle and a rental receipt, so I didn’t know if I could still back out at that point, since it considers the vehicle checked out to my knowledge.

in France, there's a grace period of 2 hours (told by agent, so not sure if it is official) to cancel "pay later" reservations

Does anyone know how long it takes for Hertz to do the refund, if I cancel a prepaid car with Hertz in time?

What are the terms under which you booked? Is it a refundable rate?

Yes. According to the terms and conditions, I could cancel with full refund if I cancelled more than 2 days before the rental would have commenced (which I did).
