I want to use a #1 award to rent from LAX but return to the downtown location. The system doesn't allow it.

What happens if I book to pick up from LAX and return to LAX using the #1 award but in the end drop off the car in LA downtown?

Anyone have any experience with something like this?

What happens if I get a regular award and then last minute decide to return to downtown LA? Will the system automatically void my voucher and ask me to pay?

I don't know, but you could ask the people at the DT location.
I wouldn't do that without asking
I mean, if you know you are going to do this in advance, why would you use an award that doesn't permit one ways?

I had this situation a while ago. Wanted to rent from one HLE and return to a different HLE, both in the DC area using points. Couldn't do it online and was told no over the phone as well. The phone rep said the intercity rentals like that are still considered one way rentals, even if the price is the same as a non one way rental.

I've done it from ORD to MDW when airline operations went a bit haywire. Was not asked to pay extra although it took a little while to sort out. I didn't ask whether that was a customer service gesture or a standard policy, sorry!

You will have to get your rental changed from to a one-way rental which requires alot more miles .... I haven't done it mid-rental before, so YMMV ... If I understand how Hertz processes it ... they have to tag the rental agreement prior after you reserve the car (for the $$$ hold on your credit card), but before the full ticketing .... so ... if you want to do this ... you may need to go into the location to get a new ticket printed out .... so e.g.

M-F Rental

Pickup Rental on Monday ... decide to change on Wednesday to another location ... go back to rental place so they can deduct the miles and reassign you a one rental for the remaining days ....
