Overview Guide to Honolulu Airport
|
Honolulu International Airport has 4 runways. The principle runway (known as the Reef Runway) was completed in 1977. It was the world's first major runway constructed entirely offshore.

The not-free airport wifi is one of the most embarrassing things about HNL.
|
It's sometimes asked what to do at HNL during a long layover. If you don't have time to actually leave the airport area but want to get out of the airport environment, there is a small "strip mall" kind of shopping area about 10 minutes away on foot from baggage claim area. They have a Starbucks, Jambo Juice, a couple of restaurants including one that serves typical Hawaiian plate lunch, a convenience store, and other types of services. It's not on the beach and there's nothing much to look at, but might better than trying to kill a few hours wandering around the airport itself.
It's called Airport Trade Center. Located on Paiea Street at the top right part of the airport map posted at the top of this thread. https://www.yelp.com/biz/airport-trade-center-honolulu |

Another idea is to visit some of the cultural gardens within the airport: http://www.lotsafunmaps.com/Oahu/Cul...u_Airport.html https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...9f710bd87b.jpg |

Good idea. Allows you to stretch your legs a bit, too.

is this still one big construction zone?

Reportedly, free wifi is coming to HNL at some point, according to this April 2017 report. Putting in antennas that would allow HNL to provide free Wi-Fi to passengers is in process. Right now, however, "the airport’s existing infrastructure is not equipped to handle the demand for free Wi-Fi," according to an official.

free wifi now available
"The free one is that people will log on and they’ll get free Wi-Fi in 45-minute sessions. However, they will have to watch a short ad, and that ad or video is less than 30 seconds."

Wow, finally catching up to the modern world of airports. Yay!
Now they need to set it up for OGG as well. |
