My daughter's friend has requested one of those oversized Toblerone boxes and since I fly next week, I've promised to *attempt* this.

Can I buy this at ARN and expect to keep it during transfer at MUC? I'm pretty sure there will be another security check in there somewhere.
Better to buy this at MUC and if so, is there a store after security that sells these?

I have a little over an hour between flights, but if there is any delay leaving Stockholm or landing in Munich, that could really impact purchase time.

What should I know *before* I try this?

And finally - the CLT flight is pretty full and that box is pretty big. Any trouble taking that on board and stowing it in an overhead? My other carryon items will fit under the seat, no problem. My coat will stay on me as a blanket and I plan on resting for those 10 hours - but will I get grief for an item too large to take as a carryon?

ARN will be more expensive than MUC. MUC sweets are almost the german retail price. You might want to check retail prices for that stuff in the US first though. The sweets in the duty free store are really not 'duty free'. The benifts only come if you buy booze and smokes (even cigarettes are cheaper than german duty free in North Carolina ) With the current downturn toblerone is surely cheaper in US.

There is a special screening for US pax in MUC after the duty free store. Chocolates are permitted on board, so You should face no difficulty. As far as space on board is concerned, you may have to settle with storing it under the seat in front of you.

I don't know why you should not be allowed to take chocolate through security, it's not a liquid. Also, I'd buy the toblerone downstairs on the G level in MUC before going through secondary screening on H level before your US flight. There are just more shops downstairs, I didn't like the few possibilities upstairs.

Usually, there is enough overhead space on LH flights, it never was a problem for me on longhoul.

Sorry, I can't on the ARN shopping possibilities. The overhead space on intra european flights is somewhat limited, so I'd buy it in MUC.

You know, maybe they put up the heating that well in munich, that it is considered liquid.

Believe me, with the quantity of chocolate that I've brought back to the U.S., you won't have ANY problems bringing back the "giant" Toblerone. Buy it at the Duty Free store in MUC or, if you have plenty of time, go thru passport control, walk over to the Edeka store in Terminal One and buy it there. You'll have to go thru security and passport control again, but it shouldn't take you long. I've found MUC very efficient.

There is a mini Edeka just outside the T2 exit too. they don't have that much selection though.

MUC security is reasonable and effecient. The only time i had issues with them was when they kept doubting the content of the soya sauce I had in the suhi to fly bento box I regularly bought at the Mangostin to compensate for the downgraded LH Y food on short haul.

I believe however that like Nutella, Toblerone makes a poor quality 'for export' product for the US market. It certainly does not taste like the original. I did however see it on sale for 50% off in Canada last week in the holiday wrapper (but again, I believe that is the 'for export' version)

Being very familiar with chocolate and with that Edeka, prices tend to be high, but it is a captive market. I agree that they have a limited selection. The price of chocolate in Germany has skyrocketed in the past year overall, however. I am generally not a fan of Edeka, in part because they often do not have very good prices on chocolate compared to other grocery stores.

Which "oversized" Toblerone do you mean? The "regular" big ones (400g) or those giant pieces (4,5kg)? The latter aren't available that often. The 400g ones should be available in MUC. Should be 14.50� for three 400g bars.

I'll pick up the largest one I can find. Four-and-a-half kilos of chocolate sounds like a lot of fun, and I know the young man who has requested it will happily share with my girls (and me) and with everything else happening on this trip, this is almost the most fun I'll have!

But if bringing chocolate means all I find are the mini versions like what my Mom found in NJ last weekend (only three Alps) then that's what I'll get.

I promised only to attempt this. Everyone has been informed that I am on a fairly tight schedule, it's January and weather issues must be considered, obnoxious amounts of money will *not* be spent on this item and it's a favor rather than a promise to deliver.

Found a small package, holds 6 bars, not a single one of the truly obnoxious sized cartons - probably a good thing.

Friend is happy, girls are happy, all worked out wonderfully.
I'll still look for the 5-kilo version.

amazon has a 750 gram version. that is the largest I have seen here in the US.
