Even in the States that's not real fast driving. I would expect to make it faster than that in Germany. |
Read this post or you'll die.....
A quite humorous yet accurate summary in "Der Spiegel":

Can someone tell me what it means when a car passes you on the Autobahn and then turns on what seems to be a third brake light? It's a brighter brake light, either below or in the middle of the other brake lights.
Almost every car that passed me did this. I was driving a Volvo, is that why? I was going plenty fast (130-145 kmh) so they weren't trying to tell me to speed up. Also it was on an empty three lane highway, and I was always in the right most lane. I actually pulled over and checked to see if my tail light was out. It wasn't. What were these drivers trying to tell me??? |

Rear fog light! Likely you had that on yourself unknowingly.
Besides it is a nuisance for those following you it's worth a ticket if visibility is over 50m ahead. |

It was foggy so at times I did have my fog lights on (which I assumed were just in the front, not in back). Maybe I forgot to shut them off? But I'm convinced people were beeping at me and "flashing" their rear fog light at me even when my fog lights were off. Hmmm..I guess it will just be a mystery. |

Yes! After looking at pictures on google of rear fog lights, that is most definitely it. Now the question is why were they blinking their rear fog light at me??

I'd bet your rear fog light was not being used appropriate t;) the situation (not on when it was foggy and or on when it was not foggy) and people were trying to let you know.
I once got trouble in the UK as I had a German car and forgot to Change my lights to left-hand-traffic........ |
Thanks everyone for solving the mystery. I must have had my rear fog light on at inappropriate times.
At the time I thought what they were doing was a German Autobahn way of saying "F*ck you!" for whatever reason: driving too slow, being in a Swedish car, etc. |

As mentioned by PAX_fips and to clarify for others reading this.
The German law is that if visibility is reduced for any reason (such as fog) then you must have your (normal) lights on (not fog lights). And visibility in fog must be less than 50m (~160 feet) before you turn on your fog lights. At the same time, then you must not drive in excess of 50 kph. |

In reality you get problems if you switch the back-light on. Some Germans drive always at least on the Autobahn with fog-lights. Normally you wonīt be stoped by the Police for switched on front fog-lights, but itīs possible. |
