Visiting Munich
Hi
We are flying into Munich as a family of 5 for a 4 day trip to watch a soccer tournament at the Allianze Arena in early August. At the moment, room rates at IHG hotels website shows the airport hotel being the cheapest for us as a family and then to pay for an airport shuttle to/from the hotel and to take the train into Munich each day and to spend the day there and then head back to the hotel after touring the city. But given we have kids with us, and the soccer match's are going to probably finish after 10.30pm, it could be a tiring journey for them taking the train into Munich, and then the train ride back to the airport and then getting to the hotel. I can see this could potentially be a 2 hour trip each day after the tournament (a 2 day tournament). Does this make sense to stay at the airport or are we better off looking for a hotel in the city and paying more? |
I would look for a hotel with direct access to the S-Bahn or U-Bahn. Dealing with a hotel shuttle from the airport at each end of the trip would grow tiring and time consuming.
|
Look in the city and pay more. Take a look at the Motel One chain which has a couple Munich properties, though if there are tens of thousands coming in for this soccer game you may be too late to get rooms with them.

Alright. Will give it a look and hope there are rooms left. Many thanks for the heads-up and advice. |
Motel-One in Garching-Hochbrueck is just one Underground hop north of Allianz-Arena and directly at the station. That Underground (U6) goes to city centre aswell.
Problem is that it's a pain to go there/from the airport - a taxi is 50E each way, maybe a bit premium to get a taxi-van for 5 of you. Next to it is also an Ibis and Ibis-Budget. |

Motel One München-City-West Landsberger Strasse 79 80339 Muenchen The rest of the hotels were full on the dates of the match's so no surprise why. :) |

Motel One München-City-West Landsberger Strasse 79 80339 Muenchen As you correctly stated, all the other Motel One's were sold out on the 1st and 2nd Aug because of the supporters coming in from Italy (Napoli), Spain (Ath. Madrid), Liverpool supporters from the UK. Hope this is a convient hotel to get to the allianz arena. :) |
That's pretty much in the centre, S-Bahn 'Donnersbergerbruecke' is just next to it. Take any train in direction Hauptbahnhof and change at Marienplatz into U6 (downstairs) in direction Garching/Forschungszentrum.
Guestimate is a 40min ride - and likely a very crowded train. If you like to buy tickets (or an app) in advance: http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/homepage/index.html |

If you only go Motel-one/Allianz and back a single/return would be cheaper, any add-on and a day-pass would be cheaper - also depends on age of the kids.
I think your best option is a group-day-ticket (you only need 'inner district') http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/ticket...ket/index.html - peace of mind and all that. The app seems to be unable to purchase group-day-tickets, weird. |
Buy the 'streifenkarte' and use it as required. Children only need to stamp 1 bar for any journey @:-)

Sidenote: "stamping" is at/before the platform - *not* in the train. (other way round in Cologne..)

Noted. So, we always must get the ticket stamped before boarding the train at any time.
P.S.: And this is true for other cities with real Subway system (which Cologne does not have) and all S-Bahn trains nationwide. |

True for the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn, different for busses and tramways. There simply is not chance to stamp the ticket in the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn.

That's why I prefer a day-pass - just screw all you "Verbund" clowns with different rules for everything :)

Location aside, any thoughts on the quality of the hard product at Le Meridien vs. Hilton Park?
Any differences in likelihood of suite upgrades? thanks in advance |
Both properties are OKish on the hard product, I would consider them nearly equal. The view from the Hilton is better, but you excluded location comments... ;)

Thanks for the comments, location as well. I would have thought people would have said Le Meridien is better/worse because of it's location near the train station. I assume the Hilton will benefit by it's location by English Park, but take an extra 10-15 minutes to get to my activities other than walking in the park. |
The surroundings of the Le Meridien are pretty crappy. The tram and bus line in front of the Hilton park will take you anywhere interesting in 10 minutes.
|
Both are functional properties that provide a clean bed in a rectangular room. Neither is a destination property and I have zero desire to stay at either one again. For the same money you can do much much better in Munich.

If you have suggestions at 150 euros/night in May, I'm interested. |
If you want a room with breakfast downtown, stay here: Hotel Eder - Hotel

I'd be all open to hearing about options at the same cost, but not sure it's possible as these are award stays at chains where I have top status (so free breakfast, likely upgrades, etc.).

At this price point it’s not easy. What about Westin Grand? Not a perfect location but would rate it over Hilton and Le Meridien. I normally stay at the Charles but it comes with another price tag. If I had to choose one location I would stay at Le Meridien. |
So based on location, two votes for Meridien and one for Hilton Park.
|
As oliver2002 mentioned, the Meridien is located in a somewhat 'rough and tumble' Hauptbahnhof zone; however its easy access from the main station is without a doubt. The Park Hilton (perhaps my favourite hotel in Minga) is a much nicer place to stay - not only for the running creek next to it and the green views from the balcony, but also because most of the staff are very nice, besides, the Englische Garten is just a stone's throw away and is a delight to visit, especially during the summer.

If you like to buy tickets (or an app) in advance: http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/homepage/index.html My question is, is there a 24 hr pass that will let me go to/from the airport as well as to Dachau? Or is it better to buy a r/t LH Bus tkt 17E to the main station get a local 1 day pass to go to Donnersbergerbruecke and later that day to Dachau That said what would be best if I make it a 2 nighter still at The Hampton, reason for The HI is least amount of pts needed for the room, toying with a 2nd night in order to walk around and checkout the city , most likely late May |
The Airport is farther away from Munich than Dachau, so the day pass will cover the trip.

Tried finding the actual costs nowadays for each and wasnt successful except that the LH Bus is 17E r/t , since the SB has a stop not far from my intended hotel that would be great but if the savings are enough I dont mind the extra time especially with a 7am arrival no hotel will let me in anyways most likely. So to save 2 E probably not worth it but for 5E + its worth the savings |
The entire network 24h ticket costs 22.90EUR: https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/ticke...ard/index.html
Thats cheaper than the LH bus or a bunch of one way tickets for sure. |

Arriving very early in the morning and was hoping to grab a noonish flight out , so that Pass wont help me to get back to MUC , while the LH Bus doesnt have a limit on the return portion, or just make sure Im on a train to the airport before the clock strikes 12 or whatever time it was used 1st. Or is the Pass a calendar thing and not a 24 hour thing which would mean having to be on a train by 6am Will probably stay 2 nights and knock Dachau off the 1st day with having all an all day pass and fend someway on day 2 |

The city thing is for tourists and valid for 24h exactly. They also have a day pass which is valid for the calendar day (actually till 6am the next morning) and cheaper.
