Even though it is now a tourist trap, I would recommend staying at Alexanderplatz. Mainly because it is the city's biggest public transportation hub. With a bunch of tram, bus, subway, S-Bahn, and regional train lines running through it. Plus, there is a good amount of shopping and entertainment venues there.
