Hi all,
I will be flying by frontier airlines, economy fare. I have purchased carry-in luggage through website. I wish to carry my backpack in addition to that. When I checked their website, link http://www.flyfrontier.com/customer-...rry-on-baggage it says that

everyone, regardless of your Fare Option, is allowed to carry on one personal item for free.

My question is, is backpack included as 'personal item'?

i think so, as long as it fits under the seat, it should be consider as your personal item.

That is indeed correct, as long as you don't have to put it in the overhead compartment you are good to go.

OP: If you scroll down to the bottom of the page you linked, you will see the allowable dimensions for a "personal item." I suspect size controls, not what type of bag it is.

it also does list back pack as an example but make sure to meet the size requirements too. If you are trying to avoid a carry-on or checked bag fee by overstuffing the backpack think again.

A backpack counts as a personal item (which is free). It MUST fit in the sizer with its content otherwise, you'll be charged for a carry-on or require to check-in.

Just to be safe I might be using a briefcase on an overnight trip next week (I can get a book, shirt, socks, underwear and my laptop in it) in case they get really strict at RDU. I saw it has to be 8 inches long and I think my backpack might be a bit longer.

I've never seen them actually make anybody size a personal item, except in a case where a passenger hadn't paid for a carry-on but had a wheeled case that was largish.
