If you have some flexibility and can fly during non-peak periods, they generally are not all that difficult to use. If you primarily fly during more expensive peak periods for your trips, you may be more frustrated. Delta.com shows the fare class in the details when selecting flights. So you could look at some prospective trips you might want to take to see if there are any flights with Z class open to see if they would be upgradeable.
Thanks - this is very helpful! We are retired so we are very flexible. I looked at several flights we are planning for next year and the upgrades were all available. I would rather have some fun earning first class then $400 LOL.

I made a reservation yesterday for PS with a GUC for D1, and when I made the reservation it said D1 was available. I'm looking at the flight today and it says D1 is sold out, but there's one seat showing up as unclaimed. The GUC hasn't cleared on my reservation. Should I call and see if this is my seat or since it's sold out - it's unlikely my GUC will clear?

Update - Called & for some reason the GUC wasn't showing up on their end (thanks for the tip!). I was waitlisted and this morning received confirmation that the upgrade cleared.

Absolutely call and ask what the status is of your upgrade request.

If booking through Delta and a portion is operated by Air France, will I be able to choose seats?
Is there a drawback to not having all Delta operated flights?

Seat selection on any AF-operated segments will be based on AF policy. If you book through DL, the best way to select seats, if able, will be to get the AF PNR (Confirmation Code) by calling or messaging Delta and then going to the AF website and inputting the AF PNR to then see about seat selection options on the AF-operated segments.

I was afraid of this. Sounds as if choosing an Air France operated segment will be a pain.
Thanks for the info.

Thanks again for the suggestion to call about my GUC. For another reservation, I know I clicked the apply GUC box but it wasn't showing up on the reservation. I called the next day & almost immediately it cleared. Is this a known bug with the website? I don't mind calling, but it would be nice if that would work like it's supposed to.

You're asking an awful lot of Delta IT for advertised features to work as advertised. That's a large part of why this forum and this subforum exist.

So I purchased LAX-PPT (DL marketed AF flight) and the flight disappeared from my profile a couple days later. I am talking to the DL CSR now and she tells me that AF didn't accept the ticket and canceled the flight. Is this a thing? Why would Delta not tell me? Or issue a refund?

Hi all,

Visitor from the UA-land here finding myself flying Delta long haul for the first time ever and I want to learn more about how buy ups work with Delta. I was booked in economy on a flight from JFK to Europe. There was an option to buy up to Comfort plus for ($200/2.5k miles) and Premium($780/78k miles) but no buy up option to business via the app. Now the 2.5k miles was a no brainer for even extra legroom so I jumped on it, but then I noticed the option to buy up to Premium was X'd out and likewise business has been closed off. Is there some limit on cabin buy ups and certain types of upgrades that cancel out the ability for future upgrades?

Thanks for any insights on this!

Delta's status match terms are a little unclear.

My understanding is that headstart is explicitly excluded unless specified (e.g. Southwest match earlier in the year). But what about Delta Vacations? The match site states "with your eligible Delta Amex card" for vacations but not for regular flights. Is this accurate? What about when cars and stays have the brief MQD offering? Is there any risk of Mosaic 1 no longer matching to Gold in the new year?

MQDs from DL Vacations is mentioned in FAQs on the Match Challenge page. I would imagine DL Stays promo MQDs (not currently active) would count too. Although somewhat unclear from FAQs. MQDs from both DL marketed and partner marketed flights count.

Just want to be clear here: Why do I need the Amex card for earning vacation mqd during the challenge but not for outside of the challenge? I can live with Delta wanting to discourage instant Gold with a single vacation, but that's sneaky.

Are we sure this is correct as written? I don't put any stock in what Delta's customer support says, but they say the site is wrong.

If I need to get the card, that's an extra week or two of lead time I need to plan for before even booking. Offers are elevated at the moment and it might work in my favor.

I would say it's pretty clear it's just a typo and the person who editted the page just forgot to move the bullet point for DL Vacations out from under DL Amex section (shift-Tab).
