Then we get to the disappointing part. Breakfast. Sad sight in J Breakfast is very sad in quality and size. Definately Y breakfast rather than J. I think the quiches are actually catered from Finland as this would go with mine being just wet soggy pile of crap (frozen and heated to melt). Just my theory. I find it difficult to understand the ubiquitous quiche. Even when cooked perfectly they are not good. Besides, it can be no surprise that airline food is difficult to cook to perfection. Meaning soggy quiche is not uncommon and makes a poor dish really unedible. Why, oh why Finnair? The "funny" thing with your breakfast is that it looks like they just took an ordinary egg-breakfast and quiched it. "Let's do scrambled eggs for breakfast, minus the eggs plus a mini-quiche". Do note that you got a "full" frutiplate, with 5 larger pieces of fruit. (NRT had 3 smaller pieces). You also got yoghurt. Luxury! |

Yeah, quiche slighly smaller than the one I've seen, but it could still be HEL catered. The kitchen could easily do different sizes (or have it topified for profit reasons).

I doubt it would be cost-efficient to transport refrigerated quiches from HEL just for Finnair's love of quiches.

The pork belly main and pea puree appetizer ex-HEL were excellent today. I didn't understand the roast beef in ponzu, it was just some thinly sliced roast beef, similar to something I'd be disappointed with in a deli sandwich. Rhubarb mousse was good, accompanied by the cloudberry wine.

Austrian adding soup back with appetizer
United adding 3rd meal on longer flights I was reading some older news from past week, sounds like other airlines are going slightly different direction with J catering. |
Just flown AY 16 on 14 June from JFK to HEL,
I find the menu and the food is quite pathetic. Definitely can see cost cut measurement has applied with quiche offered after departure and 3 breakfast choices offered for pre arrival. They run out of their signature cocktail - Northern Blush on board, wondering how many have they actually loaded or how many people do drink them, champagne and other wine options are available throughout the flight https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...aacb6d4093.jpg |
Jesus! That is even worse than the cold chicken salad what I got in this route couple of months ago. I sent a long feedback asking where is the promised three course meal. A breakfast sure can’t be it, neither is a salad or quiche after takeoff.

Somehow i thought that you cant lower the bar anymore, but well done AY, you did it.

The service trolley had passed by then. I tried to make eye contact with several FAs passing by but they totally ignored me. Yeah, I could have pressed the buzzer and ask for food, of course -- wasn't really hungry and more wanted to test the service level. I don't think that in J you should have to ask to be served. All I got on this flight was a glass of water pre-departure... that's the ultimate "Topified" LH J service for you, haha. Anyway, I think on these redeyes they should try to maximize the time for sleeping. The breakfast service starts way too early and disturbs people trying to sleep. They should take breakfast orders before takeoff and serve quickly and closer to landing. |
I’ve flown several BA JFK-LHR flights before Covid. One of the choices was warm chocolate and a bisquit and the others got a light supper. But everyone had the choice whereas AY thinks one size fits all 👎. Some passengers did not want to have a breakfast onboard but preferred the arrival lounge (if the end destination was LHR) or having the breakfast at the lounge for connections. Arrival lounge at HEL non-existant. AY choices do not cater every passengers.

I realize I am going OT here but since we like to compare what other carriers give you I'll provide some data points.
Fom my EWR-HND-SGN earlier this week: As you can see, I'm pretty sure AY gets their inspiration from UA. 14hr flight yet we got everything on one tray, main course smelled like warm dog food. Only memorable part was the ice cream sundae. Mid flight sandwich as you can see was equally disgusting. The real kicker was when we got to HND, we parked next to OH-LWN. I'm pretty sure they parked next to each other since both UA and AY use the same cheap caterer at HND :D https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...93d59aec8.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e7453db11.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5ee0f1650.jpeg Meanwhile, on NH's HND-SGN we got something actually edible and beautifully presented: https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5cfb94b6f.jpeg |
VLML (Veg lacto-ovo) on AY61 HEL-HND in J. Lots of starch in the main meal... The thing in the upper left corner was tasty, it was some kind of breaded and fried tofu, while the pasta was a bit boring.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...138ff9d1ca.jpg The second meal was a tiny quiche with cheese, fruit and some salad. Not very filling. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5a5571ebf2.jpg I wish there would have been some exciting options between the two meals. The only thing they offered was chocolates, fruits and cookies. |
Pardon my sarcasm, but how long is the HEL-HND flight that everything comes on a single tray in a portion size similar to what BT serves on RIX-HEL/VNO routes (first service)? Those BT flights usually take 35-45 minutes so I wonder if AY has found a super route to HND?

I’ve always hated the new tableware, looks damn cheap and bland, compare below to Garuda J which looks damn nice ( subsequently copied by QR J, last two photos below)

AY33 HEL-SEA, Dinner and pre-arrival snack. Decent food offering. Pre-ordered pork belly and it was OK. The two sides were good. No cheese plate was offered. Went with mousse and cloudberry for dessert and enjoyed them both very much. I wish the Mousse was bigger... It was tiny! Vegetarian quiche was served before landing. Overall, enjoyed my first flights in AY ever and I really enjoyed the new seat... They do need to provide at least one more pillow though. FA working my aisle was a total gem! https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0e609d77a.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...70392946b.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d9a65b6199.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...138e929839.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5314471eb8.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1fb69ac826.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d053aff8f1.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6f30a77a5f.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7b43300d05.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...12e65ab184.jpg |
Menu and some pictures of my meal on AY62 from HND to HEL 15JUL2023. I chose the vegetarian option, which was quite good. The dessert (matcha mousse) was tiny though, as expected. Breakfast was good, with the exception of the slice of processed cheese - first time I saw that in Business class on any carrier.

”Menus for flights to Helsinki are currently not available due to frequent changes. ”
Bold statement from the airline that is still after 8 months serving the hated leek quiche on its BKK-HEL flights… |
Has anyone tried some of the SPML on the CPH-DOH route, for instance KSML? Is it any good?

AY42 ICN - HEL Skipped the 2nd meal service as I didn't fancy Quiche, but included photos of the mid-flight snack (fruit was also offered later). https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...826b156d6.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...062bca3f4.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3e55cc77d.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c93639c75.jpeg |

I can really recommend that pork belly and Medoc. Very good crew too, excellent purser. Also looking at the filename, same menu was supposed to be on Busan flights. Maybe theyre still thinking of starting flights there? |

Winter starts at the end of October in the IATA world. It is summer until then.

Recent experience HELLAX sitting in 9L: initial drink was served quickly, also the meal tray (cold dishes and main served same time, why o why?)... after that no drink refills, no further bread offered, call button ignored (called 2 times, nada). It seems that with full cabin they can't do the act properly. And it seems minicabn is ignored too often.
Still haven't decided if I like 1A/L or 9L more. Obviously I mean 2A/L over 9L |

JFK-HEL 9.9.
Didn’t expect much from the first service in this route, but… 😅https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f72110d63.jpeg
”Dinner” https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...33bb8ea5e.jpeg Breakfast. Chose the blueberry pancakes. Not exactly delicious, but not bad at all either. |
Did this ever happen?
On late-night departures, the first service is a lighter one and we serve the main meal before landing, which allows everyone to maximise the rest time. |
