London to Gwent

Wondering what is available for train travel from London Heathrow to Wales, specifically Gwent/Newport. Thank you.

Rail Europe shows direct trains from Paddington to Newport many times daily, so you should be good to go. Of course, everything depends on when you're going.

Trains from London to South Wales are operated by First Great Western and pretty frequent. The trains are fairly old, but fast and newly refurbished.

The FGW site (as per above) is the best place to book tickets online - pricing works similarly to airline tickets, in that you get significant discounts for booking inflexible tickets, as far in advance as possible. However, unlike airline tickets, you can only book approximately 12 weeks in advance (less during major events).

As Stut suggested, talk to the organ grinder and save money...

'advance' tickets are a problem, as they are only valid on the timed service. If your flight is late, and you miss the train, then you can't use it on a later service.

Although it may be worth the risk if it is cheap enough, the other tickets (super-off-peak, off-peak, anytime) can be bought for the same price at the station before getting on the train, although seat reservations may be useful.
