I have two days (actually one afternoon/evening and the next morning) in Luxembourg late next month and would appreciate recent experiences of a nice way for a first-time visitor to spend the time. I like walking/exploring and cultural sites. I understand the Christmas markets open November 24th. Any other thoughts/ideas appreciated. Also, would like suggestions for a nice, upscale, well located hotel. Thanks!

The Wenzel Walk is very nice indeed. Otherwise, just meandering round the Old Town (not the bit where the station is - the other bit) is nice, just make sure you know where the elevators are that take you back up from the valley floor to the City. If the weather is bad, the Luxembourg City Museum is built more or less into the old fortifications, and a glass elevator takes you from the foundations of the old fortress on the ground floor to panaramic views higher up.

Unfortunately, Kathy's Cupcakery has closed, and the Park Inn is really not my (or anyone's) first choice anymore. Melia "City View" rooms have great panoramic views, as have most rooms at the Sofitel Grand Ducal. Most of the business hotels in the Kirchberg area are inexpensive (by Luxembourg standards) on the weekend, but the area is a bit dead outside of buisness hours. Whatever you do, do not repeat not stay at the Hilton DoubleTree, it's a concrete monstrosity and out of the way for just about everything.

Great insight, thanks. Will stay at the Royal, so hoping my understanding that it’s well located is correct. With just 24 total hours, (early afternoon to early afternoon Friday/Saturday), a few good walks, one good museum, and maybe a Christmas Market would round things out. Just need a good dinner idea for Friday.

The Royal is not my first choice either, but at least location is better than the Park Inn.

We were in Luxembourg for the first time this month, and really enjoyed it. The city is small and walkable and the tram network is decent.

The Luxembourg City Museum, Museum um Feschmaart (history museum) and Musee Drai Eechelen (fortress history museum) are all well worth seeing. We enjoyed riding the funicular (free) and checking out the cityscape from the Pfaffenthal elevator, which has a glass-floored viewing platform 65m above the ground. We also had a nice walk through the forest below the Drai Eechelen Museuum.

We particularly enjoyed the Royal Hamilius rooftop garden on top of the Galeries Lafayette department store. Amazing views of the city in all directions. It was a nice treat that we discovered only by accident when we were already at the store.

In terms of hotels, we're big fans of the Ibis chain and seek them out in European cities. There are multiple locations around the capital.

Here’s my trip report - I was in Luxembourg for 24 hours (early afternoon Friday through early afternoon Saturday. I spent part of the afternoon Friday walking around the town and through a couple of the Christmas Markets, which had just opened. Very walkable city, with plenty of streets with limited vehicular traffic. I had time for one museum, so I went to the City Museum and really enjoyed it, including the huge glass-walled elevator going between the three floors of very interesting and informative exhibits. I was happy with my choice of the Royal Luxembourg Hotel and the upgrade to a larger room in the private tower. Given the cold, rainy weather that day, I ate in the hotel restaurant (Amelys) and found the food and service exceptional, although expensive. Saturday morning I took a private guided walking tour, which I had arranged for through Viator. My very knowledgeable guide took me through the city to the great views (mentioned above), including the well-renowned elevator, the Cathedral, the fortifications, etc. She also knew her history well and shared stories along the way of the country’s growth, wartime experiences, the royal family’s history and connection to the people, and other interesting facts. The airport is extremely easy to navigate and was a short drive from the center of town.

Well, your guide did not get her message entirely through to you: no such thing as a royal family in Luxembourg, but a Grand Ducal one

Glad to hear you had an enjoyable time. Yes, the City Museum is excellent and the elevator within is quite unique. It also sounds like you had a great experience with your guide and you chose well.

The views from the Pfaffenthal elevator are superb, as you noted. Only a short walk away is an amenity that unfortunately neither you nor I could take advantage of due to the weather, but which would be very enjoyable in summer...the riverside footbath.

The Grand Duke is styled as His Royal Highness, so there is that.
