+1 - This is the key. The GA has all the marbles. You may well have it made right later, but that does not help the business traveler who needs to be at a meeting or the leisure traveler with time constraints on vacation.

However, many airlines seem to have a blanket rule that six months' validity is needed - even sometimes when the only validity that is required is that the passport is still valid on the day of arrival at the destination.

Which airline has this blanket rule?

Mostly, to be fair, low-cost carriers. The nuances of some country's visa requirements are sometimes not readily realised at check-in by these carriers either, but that's a different point.

I faced this in Munich airport and it became a very big issue. As mentioned by others, eventually it all depends on the immigration officer no matter whatever the embassy says.

This is absolutely not the case and I have it in writing from the Bundespolizei on the issue. I have entered the Schengen states approx. 120 times using a visa in an old passport accompanied by a current valid passport. In fact, I have actually traveled with a Schengen visa whose postdated validity start period fell after the date of cancellation of the passport it was stuck in, without any issue.
