Endorsement passport - Austria
 

I will travel to Vienna. My old passport will expire in 5 months and Emirates Airline not allow to check in then I have to make a new passport. Does the Austrian immigration allow to hold old passport with valid visa and new endorsement passport ?

As this is not a trip report I shall move it over the the Europe forum.

For Austria your passport needs to be valid three months beyond the date of intended departure. As long as you have that the airline has no right to deny you boarding.

However, many airlines seem to have a blanket rule that six months' validity is needed - even sometimes when the only validity that is required is that the passport is still valid on the day of arrival at the destination.

The OP can try to argue the toss, although it's not clear whether that would be a successful strategy or not.

However, none of this answers the OP's question...

I think what the OP is asking is that if he has 2 passports, one with the visa for Austria in his old passport, and his new passport - can he travel?

The answer to that "it depends". If Austria allows it (and most likely it does) then you can. I would check with the Austrian consulate.

Also check with EK. If they won't board the OP, it won't matter what the immigration authorities think.

OP what is your route and what passports do you now hold?

I hold Thai passport. Flight will transit at Dubai then Vienna. I will do a new passport and make the endorsement in passport. I knew that some countries can carry 2 passports and some countries must do the new visa and can't use the valid visa in old passport. In Thailand, depend on the immigration staff at that time.:(

Schengen visas have to be only in the new passport and they will not accept it if the old passport is attached to the new one and the visa is in the old one. I faced this in Munich airport and it became a very big issue. As mentioned by others, eventually it all depends on the immigration officer no matter whatever the embassy says.

I knew in Germany not allow for this case. But I don't understand why just only the Airline (Emirates) not allow. This means I have to pay for new passport and new visa. So the rule of more than 3 months passport is not important for Airline.

Why not provide all of the facts? Where do you originate (all you have provided is your transit point) and what nation issued your passport?

As to why EK might choose to require more than is published, it's because they work based on their experience. If they are experiencing passengers being denied entry with >3 months on their passport, they will deny boarding.

The OP has already mentioned the Thai passport.

Some airlines may practice their own passport validity rule because it's easier to have a blanket rule of their own than to try to train employees on something as simple as using TIMATIC appropriately and using it appropriarely always.

OP - TIMATIC itself makes clear (although the wording could be better) that if you hold a visa on an "invalidated" document, the visa is acceptable if you accompany the invalidated document with a new document. Meaning that if your visa is stamped into an expired passport, it will be accepted if otherwise valid and accompanied by a new passport.

It is well worth 5 minutes of your time to go to one of the many sites which offer no charge access to TIMATIC (one is at the link below) and plug in the variables which apply to you, e.g. Thai passport and so on. Print out the TIMATIC entry and keep it with you. Do not volunteer it at check in. But, if there is a dispute, calmly ask the agent to look up your situation in TIMATIC and make clear that you already have done so and have a paper copy handy for the agent if that is helpful.

This incidentally is a helpful thing to do when you are traveling overseas. It takes almost no time and can save endless headaches at the airport.

I don't believe that's legal. I'd play merry hell if an airline tried to do this to me.

That's all very well, and you'd be right to do that; however, you'd be the one left behind when the aeroplane takes off if the people at the check-in desk, or their managers, don't relent. :(
